wait did I forget to add that 50 from the initial 200 plates was going to be swallow? I mean semo and Egusi with bitterleaf soup and all of those were not charged for separately(Siri play me wetin you Dey find,wahalašŸ˜‚),it was all covered in the initial amount I gave them,alright some body is screaming how do you intend to pull this off?! lol Donā€™t forget that Jos is not too expensive and my added advantage I know my way around the market .
Anyways Jos crisis started and they said we should work with the initial number (200) and that 75 plates out of the 200 should be packed in takeout pack as it would be sent to the church,meaning Iā€™d only be taking food for 125guest to the reception,lol my village people have finally found a way to disgrace theirselves not me,because really?! 125 as how na??? Need I remind you that the reception axis is an area considered really safe so people would still turn up,well Iā€™m not a talkative so I should cut the chase already,it was beginning to seem like I had special interest for my pocket at this point
The curfew in jos had been relaxed from 48hours to 7-3pm so I quickly went to the market to buy the perishable I didnā€™t get earlier,I came back home to meet the bag of rice they had brought,I quickly called the attention of the event planner who was in my house at the time because they ran from their house due to jos unrest and told her that I wasnā€™t going to cook the rice because it wasnā€™t a good brand of rice ,and the oil was the lowest grade of market oil(it didnā€™t even have a name for Gods sakeā€¦Even before I started catering my mom never used low grade oil for our food,she made us understand most were high in cholesterol and since you canā€™t differentiate,no need to go down that laneā€¦.we used kings oil/grand cereal to cook ,using a bad oil didnā€™t sit well at all) I had to let them know that .The event planner said ā€œna wetin them bring we go useā€, at that point we had bought everything and I couldnā€™t refund,should I add that I had made two refunds already that week because the events were cancelled

This new discovery made me intensify preparation, I didnā€™t want anything or anyone to raise an accusing finger or say ā€œna why I no give her work before ā€œ .At this I remembered the initial guest the planner told me we were working with was 200,(I quickly thought to myself it must be strictly by invitation for a Nigerian wedding) so I quickly placed a call to the event planner to confirm if the event was strictly by invitation considering the number of guest I was asked to cater for(200)and the crowd I felt would be present...she said it wasnā€™t ā€¦Ma???!! You said???! Itā€™s not ke?!she further said,she had spoken to the groom that he wanted it that way(she gave some reasons best not spoken about),I began my sermon of how they needed to raise the number due to my experience overtime,yā€™all we are talking of a Nigerian wedding here! You know how a friend of another friend that heard by mistake is an invited guest and doesnā€™t even come alone,invites another friend,and since itā€™s not strictly by invitation you wonā€™t be able to adequately approximate the number youā€™d be expectingā€¦I tried convincing until she agreed to go back to speak with the couple,she came back and said they were considering adding half bag to the 1 bag of rice,and if I could increase the number ,okay!!! I was waiting for the part where theyā€™d say they were increasing the money too,but I guess they skipped that part,anyways I told her that it doesnā€™t work that way,rice at the moment wasnā€™t the problem ,infact we could comfortably feed up to 300 or even more from the 1 bag they had proposed earlier in so many cases,so it was to increase the money I charged for ingredients / labor not the rice #šŸ’”

Iā€™m Joy Ogiji,(before now I had the bragging rights of your favorite event caterer)pheeewwwwā€¦
Iā€™ve been cooking for 11 years for event and never have I felt this humiliated To cut to the chase ;
I got a call from an event planner(my friend) asking me to cater for an event,then she went on to say that they(the couple) would be providing the oil,rice and chicken, I quickly objected and told her that if I donā€™t do that type of work ,she then pleaded and said the wedding was to be in the village but the couples changed their mind thatā€™s why they already bought the rice and oil, ,I felt sorry for them(I knew what it felt like having last minute change of plans)and agreed to cook ..I sha gave a condition that the rice they had was a good rice,because as a caterer I know brands of rice I should and should not use for event,She then asked if two bags was going to be enough for 200 guest,that the previous caterer told them 2 bags for 200 guest ,the way I screamed ,because 2 bags was toooo much for 200 guest,I told her that 1 bag was perfect ,we wonā€™t even use all of it ,she was pleased and promised to get back to me ā€¦I initially made a quotation of 360k but later readjusted to 300k (ANYTHING to keep putting my brand out there,to think that @ professor of food which I follow on IG highly condemns) .p:s:-Sounds Noble right? But Never again;
The tricky partā€¦lolā€¦Along the line I got to know that the couples I was catering for ,were people we considered family friends kinda (yā€™all wonā€™t believe that not only were we not invited/told about the event but also we werenā€™t patronized ) ..Anyways the world is a small place ā€¦With their contract at hand,I didnā€™t let the fact that we werenā€™t considered worthy enough to share in the joy on their big day or not given the catering,get in the way,I mean you have the right to choose or work with anyone you deem fit ,but since the contract still got its way to me,I vowed to bring in my A game like always ,just to remind them that whatever they were looking for in sokoto was in their shokotoā€¦ To be continuedā€¦
