WHAT IS BAKING?
Baking is an art of preparing food that uses dry heat, typically in an oven, but can also be done in hot ashes, or on hot stones. The most common baked items are bread, cake and cookies but many other types of foods can be baked.
Cakes are typically baked at 350°F/175°C. (This is a standard temperature that works well for many types of cakes, like sponge cakes, butter cakes, and chocolate cakes.)
Key Features of Baking:
Dry Heat: Unlike boiling or steaming, baking doesn’t use water or oil as the cooking medium.
Even Cooking: Ovens provide consistent heat from all directions.
Chemical Reactions: Baking often involves ingredients like yeast, baking powder, or baking soda that help the food rise and become fluffy or airy!
Baking Tips:
1. Always preheat your oven before putting the cake in.
2. Don’t open the oven door early—wait at least 20–25 minutes to avoid the cake collapsing.
3. Use the toothpick test: Insert a toothpick in the center—if it comes out clean, it’s done.
