THEE INCIDENTS THAT BUTTRESS MY HONOUR FOR DR BAKILI MULUZI.
1. As a Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Central Region, I was standing about 10 metres from the red carpet at the Airwing Airport together with late Deputy Inspector General Hassan Maganga. The President, HE Dr Bakili Muluzi ,flew in from Nkhoma in a helicopter and was proceeding to get into the presidential jet to fly to Blantyre. He branched off the red carpet to where we stood. We saluted. He greeted my boss and then me. He went on to have a conversation with me about the police reform programme for about 3 minutes. I was going through some professional challenges at the time. That incident changed the atmosphere positively for me from thence on.
2. On 22 November 2014, at a Press Conference at Sanjika Palace, the President, H.H. Prof A P. Mutharika announced my redeployment to the Malawi Mission to the United Nations in New York as Deputy Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative. H.E. Dr Bakili Muluzi, was the only ( underline only)Malawian who phoned me and thank me for my contributions to Malawi through the police reform programme.
3. In May 2022, a month after my left leg amputation, I was chatting with my wife and children. I said to them," I think Dr Bakili Muluzi has not heard what has happened to me. He could have called." My wife asked, "How do you know?" It was my son who responded, " Mum, you might differ with Bakili Muluzi on whatever subject but one thing you cannot contend with is his humanity." A month later I got a phone call from him. He had been outside the country for some time. That day somebody had visited him and told him about my health and medical condition. He phoned to find out how I was. He further said to me that as former president of the Republic he could never forget my contribution to this country.
Being 66 Years old it is not uncommon to run out of sleep at 3 am. That's what happened last night. Then my thoughts took me in the direction of thinking about him. This is my way of making a public declaration:" DR BAKILI MULUZI, I honour and respect you. As we approach the end of this year I wish you God's blessings, good health and long life." I salute you, Your Excellency!
