Chuseok is only a few days away! As one of the major holidays in Korea, it celebrates harvest and prosperity. It's a three-day holiday that happens every year on the 8th month and 15th day of the lunar calendar. For 2020, the day of Chuseok is on October 1st, but the celebration is from September 30th - October 2nd. To celebrate, people visit their hometown and enjoy family time together. Traditionally, folk dances and various activities are performed. Nowadays, gift-giving (to family, friends, and coworkers) is also a common practice during Chuseok. Certain traditional foods are also eaten such as the popular food called songpyeon.
Songpyeon (pine cakes) is a type of tteok, or sweet rice cake. They were traditionally made to show gratitude for the harvest. With the rice cake on the outside, they are filled with an assortment of sweets such as bean powder (red or soy), nuts, or sesame seeds. While usually moon-shaped, regional differences result in other shapes such as flowers, seashells, and pumpkins. Check out these beautiful songpyeon made by to see what we are talking about! Happy Chuseok!
