NATIONAL THEATRE “RADU STANCA” SIBIU ROMANIA/TNRS
AT EXPO OSAKA 2025
The National Theatre “Radu Stanca” Sibiu/TNRS will participate, in September, at Expo Osaka 2025 in Japan, during which it will present the show “Electra” after Sophocles and Euripides, directed by Mihai Măniuţiu, a micro-recital by the Iza Group and a press conference dedicated to the premiere in Japan of the show “Iona” by Marin Sorescu, directed by Silviu Purcărete, with Kuranosuke Sasaki, co-production of Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre and Radu Stanca National Theatre Sibiu.
The TNRS tour in Japan is organized at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Romanian Pavilion Expo 2025 Osaka, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute - ICR Tokyo, the Embassy of Romania in Japan, the Ministry of Culture, Yamamoto Noh Theater.
The schedule of events at Expo Osaka 2025 is as follows:
September 23
4:00 PM – The Iza Group, an ensemble recognized for valorizing the traditional Romanian musical heritage, in an artistic form adapted to the international audience, will hold micro-recitals at the Romanian Pavilion.
September 24
• 1:00 PM – press conference dedicated to the premiere in Japan of the show “Iona” by Marin Sorescu, directed by Silviu Purcărete, with Kuranosuke Sasaki, co-produced by Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre and the Radu Stanca National Theatre Sibiu.
• 4:00 PM – the show “Electra” after Sophocles and Euripides, directed by Mihai Măniuţiu on the EXPO NATIONAL DAY HALL stage (show duration 1h10 min).
September 25
6:00 PM – a series of micro-performances within the Romanian Pavilion, artistic presentations aimed at highlighting the diversity of contemporary Romanian theatrical expression, in dialogue with the international audience of the World Expo.
The main theme of the international exhibition Expo Osaka 2025 is “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”.

1. SEPTEMBER 24, TIME 1:00 PM, PRESS CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO THE PREMIERE IN JAPAN OF THE SHOW "IONA" BY MARIN SORESCU, DIRECTED BY SILVIU PURCĂRETE, WITH KURANOSUKE SASAKI, CO-PRODUCTION TOKYO METROPOLITAN THEATRE AND THE RADU STANCA NATIONAL THEATRE SIBIU
Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre and the "Radu Stanca" National Theatre Sibiu present the premiere of the show Iona by Marin Sorescu, directed by Silviu Purcărete, with actor Kuranosuke Sasaki in the lead role, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre - Theater West. The production will have its preview on October 1, 2025, and its premiere on October 2, 2025.
The press conference will take place in the Romanian Pavilion at the 2025 Osaka World Expo, on September 24, at 1:00 p.m.
At the press conference the following will speak:

- Mr. Kuranosuke Sasaki - titular actor in the show Iona,
- Ms. Minako Naito - general producer of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre,

The press conference is organized at the invitation and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania and is part of the Osaka Expo 2025 program. The event is also possible thanks to the support provided by the Romanian Cultural Institute, ICR – Tokyo and the Romanian Embassy in Japan.
The show Iona premiered in Romania, in Sibiu, on May 21 and 22, 2025, after which it was presented, at the end of May and the beginning of June, in an international tour in: Budapest, at the National Theatre in Budapest; Cluj-Napoca, at the "Lucian Blaga" National Theatre; Bucharest, at the Odeon Theatre; Chișinău at the "Satiricus Ion Luca Caragiale" National Theatre; Sofia, the "Ivan Vazov" National Theatre, and, subsequently, within the Sibiu International Theatre Festival, 2025 edition.

Synopsis: Marin Sorescu's literature is not only a point of reference for the local culture, but a true linguistic and stylistic heritage that synthesizes some of the most special dimensions of the Romanian soul. This distinctive and recognizable specificity of his writings, in which the humor of misfortune intertwines with the precise observation of the human condition, reaches a climax in the wonderful metaphorical play "Iona" which, certainly, thanks to the talent of Silviu Purcărete, will be a true spectacular miracle. "Iona" is a declaration of love brought both to Romanian spirituality and to the ways in which the history of this people has tried to find a balance in reconciliation with the universe and nature, as well as to the beauty and refinement of Japanese culture that Silviu Purcărete will process with his well-known aesthetic precision. This nonconformist adaptation of the play by Marin Sorescu therefore has the spirit of a universal existential experience, inviting audiences from all corners of the world to enter into a spiritual communion that brings us closer to the primary energies of nature in which divinity itself manifests. We are preparing for a very special theatrical regal, an intercultural dialogue that brings together two spaces as different in appearance as they are similar in feeling, but also for an exceptional spectacular scaffolding that we invite you to discover with an open heart, in the hope of rediscovering the same peace and state of grace felt in front of the pure beauty of nature.

2. On SEPTEMBER 24, 4:00 PM – THE SHOW “ELECTRA” AFTER SOPHOCLES AND EURIPIDES, DIRECTED BY MIHAI MĂNIUŢIU ON THE EXPO NATIONAL DAY HALL STAGE
The unique encounter between texts from the great Greek tragedy – founders of the great European cultural myths – and Maramures folk music, performed live by the Iza Group, brings back an extraordinary mythology to today, provoking the creation of a space of archaic confluences.
Electra and Orestes are the tool of destiny incarnated by the closed community (Electra is the axe, the courtiers-guards wrote it on her back in blood) and its members take care that these two brothers fulfill it.
It is the sign of the descent of the tragic from the palace to the edge of the world, of the preservation of the tragic far from the harsh core of social life. It is a ghetto of today's world, which has invented for itself ancestral functioning mechanisms, recomposed by Măniuțiu with a mirror-like clarity in which the instruments and voices of the Iza group reverberate.

ギリシャ悲劇の古典的テキスト——ヨーロッパ文化の神話的基盤——と、マラムレシュ地方の民俗音楽との斬新な融合が、グループ・イザによるライブ演奏を通じて現代に蘇ります。この出会いは、古代の交差点を思わせる空間を創出し、壮大な神話を新たな形で呼び起こします。
エレクトラとオレステは、閉ざされた共同体によって運命の道具として具現化されます（エレクトラは斧であり、彼女の背には血でその印が刻まれている——それは廷臣であり監視者でもある者たちの手によって）。共同体の構成員たちは、この兄妹がその運命を果たすよう導きます。
この作品は、悲劇が宮廷から世界の辺境へと降りてきたことを示す象徴であり、社会の中心から遠く離れた場所でその本質がいまだ残されていることを物語っています。それは、現代のゲットーが自らのために創り出した祖先的な機構であり、マニュツィウによって鏡のような明晰さで再構築され、グループ・イザの楽器と声がその空間に響き渡ります。
