Why experience art in a temple rather than in a white cube?
Myokenji Temple is home to four distinctive gardens, each with its own unique character.
One of them is the Mōsō Bamboo Courtyard.
Enclosed by the temple buildings, this intimate pentagonal garden is filled with vibrant bamboo and moss. The gentle rustling of bamboo leaves and the crisp, tranquil air enrich the experience of encountering art in this remarkable setting.
The bamboo garden is carefully maintained each year in harmony with the natural growth of the plants. In reference to the 28 chapters of the Lotus Sutra, the garden is kept at 28 bamboo stalks. It is a place where nature is respected, and beauty is continually nurtured by human hands.
Centuries of this quiet practice have shaped the atmosphere of the temple, allowing artworks presented here to reveal qualities that cannot be experienced elsewhere.
At CURATION⇄FAIR Kyoto, art is not experienced in isolation. The gardens, architecture, light, sound, and the passage of time all become part of the encounter, creating an experience that can only exist in this place.
「ホワイトキューブ」ではなく、寺院で作品を見る理由。
妙顕寺には、それぞれ趣の異なる四つの庭があります。
そのひとつが「孟宗竹の坪庭」。
建物に囲まれた五角形の小さな庭では、青々とした竹と苔が織りなす景色、そして葉擦れの音や澄んだ空気までもが、この場所で作品と向き合う時間をより豊かなものにしてくれます。
坪庭の竹は、毎年生え方に合わせて手入れが施され、法華経28章にちなみ、28本になるよう整えられています。自然の姿を尊重しながら、人の手によって美しさを育くむ。そのような営みが何百年も積み重なってきたこの空間だからこそ、作品もまた、いつもとは異なる趣を見せてくれるでしょう。
作品だけを見るのではなく、その作品が置かれた環境ごと味わうこと。
庭の静けさや建築の佇まい、そこに積み重ねられた時間が作品と響き合い、この場所でしか味わえない鑑賞体験を生み出します。
