In the past few days, a major controversy has been spreading within the international wedding industry, sparked by discussions on Instagram and Threads.

Several viral posts are talking about a Chicago-based photographer who allegedly published weddings that were never actually photographed, using generative AI: starting from images by other photographers or stock photos, and building entire “fake portfolios.”

This is no longer about simply “stealing” images. It’s about creating and presenting fictional work in order to secure bookings, with the calculated risk of disappointing real clients.

How can you protect yourself?
• Ask photographers to show at least 2–3 full galleries of real weddings with real couples (not editorial shoots with models),
• take the time to verify their reputation and the consistency of their work through reviews and their website.

We recently received an inspiration board from a future bride, a collection of pictures that resonated with her and her wedding.

As we scrolled through it, something caught us by surprise: many of those images were photographs we took almost ten years ago.

It made us pause.

We went back to those galleries, curious, maybe even a little cautious... there’s always that quiet fear when revisiting past work:
“Will it feel dated?”
“Were those choices too tied to a trend, a phase?”

But what we found was something else entirely.

Those images didn’t feel old.
They felt alive, timeless and still honest.

And it reminded us of something we often forget in a world that moves fast and constantly reinvents itself: not everything needs to follow a trend to remain relevant.

As photographers, we can be our own harshest critics. We question, we evolve, we outgrow. And sometimes, we fear time, because we associate it with distance from what we once were.

But maybe time doesn’t take value away.
Maybe it reveals it: like wine, certain images don’t age, they deepen.
They gain weight, meaning, character.

And perhaps the goal was never to be “modern” or "fashion forward" or "editorial". Never to just fit in the style of a trendy magazine or blog.
But to be true enough that, years later, someone who doesn't event know the couple, still feels something looking at it.
