The oldest and largest Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum) in the US is located in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. This tree, also known as the “Great Pagoda Tree,” is a landmark in downtown Edgartown and is estimated to be nearly 200 years old. It was planted years ago by a whaling captain just back from China. The Samaúma Ceiba pentandra is a tree of the Malvaceae family, the same family as the paineiras, barriguda and baobá trees. The species is native to the region that stretches from Mexico to the north of South America. Also known as mafumeira, in Brazil, it occurs in the floodplain forest of the Amazon, in the North, Northeast and Central-West regions. Considered sacred by the ancient Mayan people and many indigenous peoples of Brazil, its canopy protects above all other trees, providing shelter and protection for other species of flora and countless birds and insects. Its roots (the Sapopemas) are capable of absorbing water from deep within the Amazon soil, hydrating not only the tree itself, but also other trees of different species. At specific times, when the roots reach a certain level of humidity, the tree releases this excess and irrigates its entire surrounding area.

A GIGANTIC White Ash in Sparkill, NY. Said at one time to be the largest White Ash in America, it died and was cut down in 2015. The ash measured 27 feet in circumference, was 90 feet tall, and had a 97-foot crown. Estimated over 200 years of age.
