An intimate evening of ghazals arrives in McLean this weekend. The host curated this flyer for their guests, perfectly capturing the elegance of the upcoming evening.

There is a unique depth in a private mehfil—no stage spectacle, no noise, no distractions. Just poetry, melody, and listeners who truly value the art. These baithak-style gatherings are the reason the ghazal tradition remains timeless. The connection is pure, and every shayari resonates deeply in a room that honors the words as much as the music.
Looking forward to an evening of soulful melodies with a room full of true ghazal lovers.

For private Mehfil bookings or inquiries, feel free to reach out via DM.

Most people try to copy a singer’s surface-level style—like Arijit Singh’s husky texture or emotional sighs. But if you just mimic the tone, you’ll always remain a copycat, unable to create a song from scratch in your own original style.

True originality is either in-born talent, acquired through years of rigorous training, or a beautiful mix of both.

Here is the shift you need: A composer only lays the foundation of a song. It’s entirely up to the singer’s improvisational skill to breathe life into it.

This is where Classical Training changes the game:
• Deep Raag Knowledge: Allows you to explore and manipulate a composition rather than just reciting it.
• Consistent Riyaz: Opens up your vocal range and muscle memory so variations feel effortless.
• Faster Adaptability: You decode songs instantly because you recognize the raag architecture underneath.

This doesn’t just upgrade singers; it transforms listeners. You stop passively consuming music and start listening like a composer. Your taste refines, your knowledge deepens, and your musical quality skyrockets.

Are you still trying to copy the texture, or are you ready to train the technique? Let’s talk in the comments. 👇

A studio mic, reverb, echo can hide imperfections, but a raw, acoustic session reveals everything. Ahead of an upcoming Ghazal night, the preparation requires stripping away the production to focus entirely on the foundational elements of the melody.

Rehearsing a masterpiece like “Salona Sa Sajan” requires absolute precision. Originally brought to life with the incredible nuance of Asha Bhosle Ji and the genius of Ghulam Ali Khan Sahab, this composition demands control, breath management, and emotional depth.

Revisiting this classic during riyaaz is a reminder that the performance on stage is merely the result of the quiet, disciplined hours spent behind closed doors. Keeping the tradition of the Mewati Gharana alive means respecting the process before the curtain rises.

A studio session from the archives, preparing for the Mika Singh concert in Washington DC 🇺🇸

Rehearsals for large-scale concerts differ significantly from intimate baithaks. The atmosphere, song selection, and musical arrangements shift to match the energy of the audience. For an event centered around a high-energy performer like Mika Singh, the focus moves toward light-hearted melodies rather than deep Raags or Ghazals.
However, the foundation of a Raag exists even in the most popular tracks.

This classic is inspired by Raag Pilu and set to Keherwa Taal. Whether on a concert stage or in a baithak, a deep understanding of Raag and Taal provides the freedom to play with the melody artistically rather than merely mimicking the original recording.

Did you know this song was in Raag Pilu? Comment Yes or No.

Some melodies become a permanent bridge to the Golden Era.

This Madan Mohan Ji masterpiece is a masterclass in Raag Adana — and that evening, the audience wasn’t just requesting a song. They were requesting a feeling of permanence, nostalgia, and emotional memory that refuses to fade with time.

That is the difference in an intimate Baithak setting. Every note becomes a conversation. You don’t perform at people; you carry them with you through the Raag, through the poetry, through the silence between the lines.

And somewhere between the alaaps and the final notes, the room stopped feeling like a private gathering in 2026. For a few minutes, we were all transported back to 1962 — reliving a shared cultural memory together.

As a performer, audiences usually see the final stage version — the lights, the rehearsed set, the finished performance.

What they rarely see is this.

Sitting beside my mother, stopping after every Bengali line to ask, “Did I say that correctly?” while preparing for my upcoming Kolkata performance.

At 83, her ear still catches every nuance instantly. That precision did not happen by accident. It came from decades of rigorous riyaaz and training under her Guru, Gyan Prakash Ghosh.

Growing up, I watched music exist in our home not as performance, but as discipline — daily practice, repetition, listening, correction.

Today, when she sits beside the harmonium and guides me through these songs, I realize these moments are becoming rarer, more valuable, and more emotional with time.

Happy Mother’s Day to my first Guru - my Maa ❤️

Consistency means showing up even when it’s inconvenient. Some days I practice at sunrise, and some days it’s late at night after a long performance. But the discipline of Riyaz doesn’t have an “off” switch.

My secret for those low-energy days? Instead of skipping practice, I pick a semi-classical or a classical film song. It’s a great way to stay connected to the “sur” without the pressure of a full session.

This was one of those days—just a few quiet minutes after a show, revisiting a beautiful Bandish in Raag Gurjari Todi. Many might recognize this melody from the movie Delhi-6, but classical singers know this as the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Sahab’s Bandish.

Raag Gurjari Todi has its own charm. Its mood is set in “Vipralambha Sringara” or “Karuna Rasa,” which expresses a deep, soulful longing. The lyrics “Bhor bhaye tori baat takat piya” = सुबह हो गई है, मैं तुम्हारी राह देख रही हूँ.

When you’re exhausted, these notes are healing. Don’t skip your Riyaz today—just pick your favorite Raag-based film song and sing for 10 minutes. Your voice will thank you later!

🎶 Share this with a fellow musician who needs a “cheat code” for practice!
✨ Save this reel for your next low-energy day and follow for more insights.

Revisiting Salona Sa Sajan for an upcoming Mumbai set.
Keeping it bare in riyaaz with Maa—just the basic melody. The finer details come together during the final rehearsal with the musicians.

Comment “❤️” if you love raw practice.
