Gender Bias 4
Darwin taught that human s*x differences were due partly to s*xual selection, specifically because men must prove themselves physically and intellectually superior to other men in the competition for women, whereas women must be superior primarily in s*xual attraction. Darwin used examples of cultures that require the men to fight competitors to retain their wives to support this conclusion. Because "the strongest party always carries off the prize," the result is that "a weak man, unless he be a good hunter . . . is seldom permitted to keep a wife that a stronger man thinks worth his notice"

Gender Bias 3
Several studies have found that women earn a smaller average wage than men. Many economists and feminist scholars have argued that this is the result of systemic gender-based discrimination in the workplace. Others, however, maintain that the wage gap is a result of differences between the choices that men and women make in the workplace, such as more women than men choosing to be full-time parents or work fewer hours to be part-time parents.

Eurostat found a persistent, average gender pay gap of 17.5 percent in the 27 EU member states in 2008.[48] Similarly, the OECD found that female full-time employees earned 17 percent less than their male counterparts in OECD countries in 2009.

Gender Bias 2
"When women are empowered and can claim their rights and access to land, leadership, opportunities and choices, economies grow, food security is enhanced and prospects are improved for current and future generations".

Gender Bias _ post 1

Author Jeffrey Archer, who was in the city on Monday to launch the third book in his five-part series The Clifton Chronicles, told Hindustan Times that a “massive problem” in India is that women are not treated as equals.
There is a massive problem [in India], and it is a terrible thing for any woman to not be treated as an equal. The instance [of the Delhi gang r**e] is very terrible,” said Archer. “But I am very aware of the next generation of young women in this country being very self-confident and assured. Education is the key, and education not only of women, but also of 'stupid' men who think they are superior.”
Archer, 72, said the gender bias existed to some degree in England as well.
"We still have people in England who treat women as inferior. You will never get rid of all of it. The mindset has to change over the years. We have had a woman Prime Minister and so has India,” he said.

Archer, whose books have been bestsellers in India, admitted he did not know why he was so popular here. “It is a complete mystery to me as to why, in India, I outsell everyone. In the rest of the world, I am fighting with two or three others [writers], but not in India. This is my country,” said Archer.

However, fans should not expect a novel about the country any time soon.

“I love this country and know this country, but I don’t have the confidence to write an Indian novel, though Indians fans always ask me to write one,” Archer said.

He added that he plans to write a set of short stories after completing the series and then work on a novel.

“I will continue writing for another 20 years,” he said.

Best Kept Secret is the third installment of The Clifton Chronicles, a quintology. The books revolve around the protagonist Harry Clifton’s life from 1920 to 2020.

Archer said the books are almost autobiographical.

» 77 % of India can’t spend more than ` 20 a day.
» 80 % of India’s population or more than 850 million people live on less than 2$ ( `` 92) a day… Worse than many parts of the sub-saharan Africa.
» The wealth of 30 odd rich Indian families is equivalent to 1/3 rd of the country’s growth … the super rich concealing the ugly face of poverty.
» An alarming 22 % of world’s poor live in India, battling hunger, poverty and disease… more people are mired in poverty in eight Indian states than in the 26 poorest African countries.
» India has the largest number of stunted, wasted and underweight children… Half of our children are malnourished, a record worse than the world’s symbol for deprivation- sub saharan Africa.
» Nearly 50 % of the world’s hungry live in India… India is ranked 66th out of 88 countries in the global hunger index.
» Around 35 % of India’s population- 350 million are considered food-insecure, consuming less than 80 % of minimum energy requirements.
» About 58 % of the subsidized food doesn’t reach families below the poverty line.
» About 5 % the population (50 million people) are unable to but food grains even at BPL rate through out the year.
» More than half a million children have died in the state of Madhya Pradesh alone due to malnourishment and lack of health services.
» Every third Indian or nearly 400 million people live below the poverty line.
» Between 1997 and 2007, more than 1.3 million tones of grain (13,000 truck loads) decayed in storage in a country which has more hungry people than 33 developing nations… foodstuffs worth more than ` 58,000 crore are wasted annually.
» Since 1997, around 7,300 farmers have committed su***de in Vidarbha, Maharasthra
» At least 10 homeless people are dying on the streets of the nations’ capital everyday… about 75 % of the urban population is poor, living on about ` 80 per day.
» No doubt India ranks 134 out of 182 countries in united nations human development index, worse than Syria, worse than many African nations too.

Globally, about 1 billion people are absolutely poor, living on less than a dollar a day; 162 million live well below that on less than half a dollar a day. About 800 million people are hungry, lacking sufficient access to food and far more people suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies that lead to serious health problems.

We believe that there are many causes of hunger; therefore we take an integrated approach when looking for solutions to communities’ food shortages and nutritional problems.

We will be integrating programs seek to provide long-term solutions to hunger. An area of exploration that we are presently focusing on is the lack of linkages between agricultural production and nutrition. The importance of deliberate decision-making regarding nutrient-rich crops can make a significant difference in the nutritional status of young children, coupled with a social approach that addresses the gender issues and education around food storage, preparation and eating order.
