Is it attitude — or is there something underneath the reaction?
Teenagers can sometimes react in ways that are difficult to understand.
Snapping.
Shutting down.
Getting irritated over small things.
Not wanting to talk.
Going from calm to extremely upset.
It can be easy to label these behaviours as “attitude” or “bad behaviour.”
But sometimes, what we see on the outside is only the reaction — not the emotion underneath it.
A teenager may be overwhelmed, frustrated, misunderstood, embarrassed or simply struggling to put their feelings into words.
Understanding this doesn't mean excusing hurtful behaviour or removing boundaries.
It means creating space to ask a different question:
“What's happening for you right now?”
Because emotional regulation isn't about never feeling angry, frustrated or overwhelmed.
It's about gradually learning how to recognise those emotions, understand them and respond to them differently.
And that is a skill that develops with time, experience and support. 🤍
If you're a parent or caregiver, save this post for the next time your teenager's reaction feels difficult to understand.
And if you've found yourself navigating similar situations, share this with another parent who might need this reminder.
