Lá fhéile Pádraig sona dhuit / Happy St Patricks Day

Happy St Patrick's day to all near and far!
Traditions of the day vary from town to town, even from family to family but two we are particularly fond of here on the Estate are:
𝑺𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒖𝒅𝒔: In many parts of the country, St Patrick's day marks the planting of the first early potatoes of the year. While the majority will be planted later, many will ensure at least a few are 'set out' today.
Traditionally, these are usually dug on the 29th of June (Feast of St. Peter and Paul). It is also an opportunity to "test the ground", checking the soil temperature and condition to plan the sowing of other crops.
𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒍𝒖𝒄𝒌 𝒕𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒘𝒆𝒅𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒅𝒂𝒚: While brides carrying horseshoes on St Patrick's Day is more common in some parts of the country than others, brides and grooms marrying today sometimes embroider shamrocks into their wedding attire.
More commonly, women are increasingly including shamrock in their bouquets in the hopes of bringing a little luck to the day and new life, with men opting for small sprigs mixed into their boutonniere - not just on St Patrick's day but well beyond.

Rockhill House: A Spirit of Place
The historic Rockhill House, nestled in 100 acres of woodlands in the hills above Letterkenny, County Donegal, is a charming and elegant country house and estate offering guests timeless Irish hospitality, a most exclusive and comfortable stay, gourmet dining on fabulous fare and unique, authentic local experiences.
This is a special place, filled with memory, magic and natural majesty. It’s a place of ease and energy – somewhere to bask in the poetry of landscape; to breathe pure Atlantic air; to reconnect and feel at your best. It’s a place of heritage and heart – culture, arts and the deep Irish tradition in land and nature, the fabric of life at Rockhill.
You can arrive here easily from Donegal, Derry and Belfast Airports; and we’re not too much further from Ireland West Airport. We also have a helipad for those who wish to arrange an arrival by private helicopter to Rockhill (and you could have no better introduction to spectacular Donegal than to take a tour from the perspective of our Golden Eagles!)
Rockhill House is a unique central hub for touring in County Donegal and experiencing the Wild Atlantic Way, the world’s longest defined coastal touring route spanning some 2,500 km along the western seaboard of Ireland. This is an ideal base for a great exploration of the coastal islands, our music and dance traditions; for sea fishing off dramatic cliff edge seascapes or on the gentlest of beach coves and inland rivers and loughs. Rockhill is a perfect launchpad for those intending to enjoy a spread of Donegal’s finest world-class links golf courses; or to set out on a food adventure to meet the local people behind our fantastic food culture.
Just as accessible, when you head northwards from Rockhill, is the astonishing Causeway Coastal Route. Beginning with the drama of the historic walled city of Derry (just over half an hour away) and reaching round the rugged coast via exquisite Mussenden Temple at Downhill; awesome Game of Thrones settings such as the jagged ruins of Dunluce Castle; and the epic Giant’s Causeway, this amazing 154 mile road trip takes you right in to the heart of Belfast, Northern Ireland’s buzzing capital.
Rockhill is just on the edge of Letterkenny, Donegal’s largest town, yet it’s a world away from it all, amid its rolling lawns and glorious halls. Though you have every convenience and a host of unique and authentic experiences close to hand, you’ll be struck by the feeling of a real escape: Freedom!
As you wind your way up our long beech-lined drive, you will feel as though you are stepping back in time, into a truly traditional Irish country house demesne.
But, while true to history and faithfully restored to Georgian glory, Rockhill is thoroughly modern and, you might say, avant garde in its outlook. It has long been the place for stylish and imaginative celebration – and, say the Molloy Family, long may that reputation continue!
Make yourself at home in this striking country house.
Rockhill House is bookable for an exclusive private-use or pre-booked events so can become your very own pleasure garden for a day – or as long as you desire!
When your festivities are coming to a close, there’s no need to rush off – guests can retire to one of our 19 unique, luxurious bedrooms for a contented night’s sleep.
