⚽ What an absolute privilege to welcome Irish football legend Ray Houghton to Carty's Bar & Lounge - Knock this evening! 🇮🇪👏

🎤 Ray sat down for a wonderfully personal and fascinating chat with fans, sharing stories, memories and insights from an incredible career. An inspiring speaker, a true gentleman and an absolute legend, he had everyone captivated from start to finish. 🙌

⚽ From that goal against England in Euro ’88 to his unforgettable strike against Italy at USA ’94, having Ray with us — alongside three iconic trophies 🏆the FA Cup 🏆the Premier League Trophy and 🏆the UEFA Champions League Trophy — was a real trip down memory lane. A special moment was seeing him pose proudly behind the bar! 🍻📸

🟣🔵 Organised by James Carty in support of Down Syndrome Mayo, the evening was about much more than football. Ray also took the time to see first-hand the fantastic work being done by the Mayo branch earlier today after flying into Ireland West Airport, making the occasion all the more meaningful ☺️🤝

👏 A huge thank you to Ray for his time, generosity and genuine warmth, to James Carty for organising such a memorable evening, and to Keith at Peak Top Agency for helping make it happen. A special mention to Brian Murphy, a gifted MC who kept things flowing brilliantly on the mic! 🎤⭐

🥃 | A special bottle of “Uisce Beatha” — the water of life 🍀✨

Next time you're in the Lounge at Carty's Bar & Lounge - Knock, take a look at a little piece of Carty family history❤️🏡

🥃 Displayed behind the bar, you'll find a vintage bottle of John Jameson & Son JJ&S Dublin Wh***ey, Ten Years Old, alongside a framed display of its original label and neck label 🖼️📜

🔎 But what makes this particularly special isn't just the wh***ey or its age. It's the name printed at the bottom of the label: 🖋️📜

“Bottled by James Carty, Knock, Claremorris.” 🍀

James “Jim” Carty was Michael's grandfather, and here, in the lettering of a bygone era, his name has been preserved for generations to come 🕰️👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 But there's a bigger story behind that label… 📖✨

🕰️ Long before today's familiar branded bottles filled the shelves, Ireland had a tradition of local wh***ey bottlers 🇮🇪 Publicans, vintners and w**e merchants could purchase wh***ey in bulk, bottle it for sale, and label it with their own business name 🍾🏷️ These local bottlers were an important link between the distilleries and the communities they served 🏭🤝🏘️

🏭 The wh***ey itself came from one of Ireland's most famous distilling names 🇮🇪 John Jameson established his Bow Street distillery in Dublin in 1780, building a business that would become synonymous with Irish wh***ey 🥃✨ The JJ&S name on our bottle belongs to that long history, while the words “Dublin Wh***ey” connect it to Jameson Irish Wh***ey historic home at Bow Street 📜🏙️

🖼️ Today, the bottle and its framed labels sit together behind the bar in our Lounge 🍻 They're a reminder that pubs have always been about more than what's poured into a glass 🥃 They're about family 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦, community 🏘️, conversation 💬 and the stories passed down through generations ❤️📖

🚂 From Dublin's historic distillery to a local bottler in Knock, and eventually to its place behind the bar at Carty's — this little bottle has quite a story to tell 🥃🍀

❤️ Some bottles are made to be opened 🍾 Others are kept to remember the people and places that made them special 🕰️🏡

Remember the days when All-Ireland Finals were played in September? 🍂

Here’s a lovely photograph hanging on the way into the Lounge at Carty’s 📸, capturing both — and, more importantly, two great characters... Michael Carty Snr and one of the great characters of Wexford hurling, Martin Storey. 🏑

1st September 1996 and Michael was in Dublin for the All-Ireland Football Final, where Mayo took on Meath in Croke Park. 🏐 You might recall that one — the dramatic draw, the replay two weeks later… and, well, we’ll leave the result of that replay in the history books. 💔

Because today, ! ❤️💚🎉

But back to the photograph. ⏩️

Michael bumped into Martin Storey in Dublin and stopped for a photograph. 📸 Just two weeks earlier, the Oulart-The-Ballagh man had captained Wexford to their first All-Ireland Senior Hurling title in 28 years, defeating Limerick 1–13 to 0–14. 💪

Wexford had played the entire second half with 14 men, but somehow held on to bring the Liam MacCarthy Cup back to the Model County.🏆

Storey was 32, married with three children, and had been playing senior inter-county hurling for Wexford since 1986. 🙌 He had already won an All-Star in 1993, but in 1996, as captain, he finally reached the summit. 🏅

His words after lifting Liam MacCarthy perhaps said it best: “We’ve been described as the bridesmaids of hurling. Well, today we got married.” 😂

Sound vaguely familiar? 🤔

30 years later, Mayo would finally get married too - after a 75 year wait! 💚❤️🏆 And for many, it's been bittersweet, with some of the greatest Mayo supporters — people who gave a lifetime to the Green and Red — not getting to see it. 🕊

Michael was one of them. But we'd like to think that, wherever they all are, they're celebrating too! 🥰

A little snapshot of a different Ireland. 🕰Wexford and Mayo. 💜💛 💚❤️ Hurling and football. 🏑🏐 Croke Park and All-Ireland dreams. 🏟 1996 and 2026. 🕰 And, after all those years…

… and what a picture this is! 🥰📸

We were absolutely delighted recently to be gifted this very special photograph of Knock School, 1962, kindly given to us by John & Rita Flatley — with John himself proudly pictured amongst the children! ☺️

Thirty-three faces. Thirty-three stories. One incredible little snapshot of Knock life more than 60 years ago. 🕰️📸 Taken in the original Knock school building, this photograph captures the school community just five years before they moved into the new school building on the site of today’s National School in 1967. 🏫

And while some of those pictured are sadly no longer with us, photographs like this are something truly special — a moment in time preserved for generations, bringing back memories of school days, friends, families and a Knock that many will remember fondly. ❤️
