DADDY G IN DROGHEDA: A MAJOR COUP FOR THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE
EXTERNAL SOUNDS PRESENTS DADDY G (MASSIVE ATTACK) — SARSFIELDS BEERGARDEN, SUNDAY 25 OCTOBER
This is one gig we’ve been meaning to feature on the page all week, and what a booking it is. External Sounds return to Sarsfields Beergarden tomorrow night with an event that represents another major coup for dance music in Drogheda.
Bringing Daddy G, co-founder of Massive Attack and one of the key figures in the development of the legendary Bristol sound, to the town is no small achievement. From the pioneering Wild Bunch soundsystem days to Massive Attack’s groundbreaking work shaping the landscape of trip-hop and electronic music, his influence stretches across decades of British music culture.
But Daddy G’s story goes far beyond one band. At heart, he’s a soundsystem DJ, drawing on the rich traditions of reggae, roots and dub while moving effortlessly through funk, disco, soul, old-school hip-hop and punk. His sets reflect the eclectic musical heritage that helped shape the Bristol underground and the sound of Massive Attack itself.
Joining him is Count Skylarkin, an accomplished DJ, Trojan Records remixer and longtime collaborator who has toured with The Wailers and spent decades championing reggae, rocksteady, ska and soundsystem culture. With an extensive knowledge of Jamaican music and a track record spanning major festivals and legendary artists, he’s a serious addition to the bill in his own right.
Completing the lineup is DJ Kellser (Keith Kelly), representing External Sounds on home turf.
External Sounds have been putting together some impressive events in Drogheda, and it’s great to see that ambition continuing. These are the kinds of bookings that put the town firmly on the map, bringing internationally recognised names into a local setting and giving audiences the opportunity to experience something genuinely special on their doorstep.
There’s more to this one than the lineup alone. The event runs in partnership with the Lú Festival of Light and the Drogheda Purple Flag initiative, with support from Louth County Council and the relevant government department, helping connect live music with the wider cultural life of the town.
It’s encouraging to see Drogheda continuing to attract quality music events and ambitious bookings. Independent promoters and venues play a huge role in keeping local music culture moving forward, and External Sounds deserve credit for continuing to push things in the right direction.
