If you’re spending Easter in Hungary, here’s something you should know 👇🇭🇺

Easter (Húsvét) is not only a religious holiday, but also an important cultural tradition, especially when it comes to food.
During this time, Hungarian families prepare a
traditional meal that usually includes:

🥩 Ham (Sonka)
🥚 Boiled eggs
🌶️ Horseradish (Torma)
🍞 Kalács (sweet braided bread)
These foods are not random — they symbolize renewal, strength, and the end of winter fasting.
👉 If you’re an international student in Hungary, this is your chance to experience local culture through food.

One of the most unique Easter traditions in Hungary is called Locsolkodás 💦🇭🇺

On Easter Monday, boys visit girls and sprinkle them with water or perfume.
This tradition comes from old beliefs about purification, fertility, and bringing good luck for the year.

In return, girls usually give:
🥚 Painted eggs
🍫 Sweets
🥃 Sometimes even a drink
Today, it’s a mix of tradition and fun — especially in smaller towns, but you can still experience it in cities too.
👉 If you’re new in Hungary, don’t be surprised if someone shows up with perfume on Easter Monday

📢 Renting in Hungary: Know Your Rights! 🏡🇭🇺

Are you an international student renting an apartment in Szeged? Here’s what you need to know about your rights as a tenant and your landlord’s responsibilities.

✅ Tenant Rights:

🔹 Rental Agreement: Always sign a written contract to protect yourself. It should include rent, deposit, payment terms, and notice period.
🔹 Deposit (Kaució): Usually 1-2 months’ rent. It must be returned when you move out unless there’s damage.
🔹 Maintenance & Repairs: Landlords must handle major repairs (e.g., heating, plumbing), while minor maintenance (changing lightbulbs, cleaning) is the tenant’s responsibility.
🔹 Rent Increases: Rent can only be increased if stated in the contract or agreed upon by both parties.
🔹 Privacy: Your landlord cannot enter without prior notice unless it’s an emergency.
🔹 Utility Bills: Check your contract! Some rents include utilities, while others require separate payments. Ask for monthly meter readings if needed.

❗ Landlord Rights & Responsibilities:

🔸 Timely Rent Payment: Tenants must pay rent on time. Late payments may lead to warnings or eviction (based on contract terms).
🔸 Property Condition: Tenants must keep the apartment clean and in good condition. Any damage beyond normal wear and tear must be covered by the tenant.
🔸 Eviction Rules: A landlord cannot force a tenant to leave without following legal procedures. If you have a fixed-term contract, the landlord can only evict you for breach of contract (e.g., unpaid rent).
🔸 Contract Termination: Both tenant and landlord must respect the notice period stated in the contract (typically 30-60 days).
