In earlier centuries, it was known by several different names – such as dorongfánk, botfánk, and botratekercs – yet the experience of enjoying it fresh and steaming has remained the same for hundreds of years.

A kürtőskalács neve is beszédes. A mai elnevezés csak a 20. század közepén vált igazán általánossá, formája pedig a régi tűzhelyek kürtőjét idézi. Korábban több néven is ismerték – dorongfánk, botfánk, botratekercs –, de a friss, gőzölgő élmény évszázadok óta ugyanaz.
