to a trip to China in 2011 (maybe 2010. I can’t remember). I’d just got a new laptop and was kind of broke. I had quit touring because I had gone to collage to see if I could be a social worker. I wasn’t really doing Atomic Hooligan stuff and my mum was sick. So I was splitting time all over the place just doing stuff. A China tour was offered so I took it as I needed the money. I put Ableton on my new laptop, got my visa and left for 2 weeks. Basically bunking off collage and playing music again.
I had fallen out of love with the music I was playing and was purely doing it for the money.
I was always finding and cutting samples and saving them to use at some point. So on my off days I thought, I’m going to make some hip hop. I made this loop with sample cuts and programmed some drums. Then I found the Jay Z sample.
When I got home, I asked .d.brownhill and to be on it and linked me with

It never really did anything, but I still love it. It gave me a bit of inspiration in a bit of a dark time in my life. As long as you can be creative, you can keep moving forward.

A job in 2 pictures. a DJ and a teacher.
These are 2 pics I chose because they make my job look cool… and it is. I love it.

But as with anything on social media, it’s always meant to be taken with a grain of salt. My job dosnt look like this every day. This week had been a tough one. I had a great workshop on Tuesday evening. But the rest of it…. >sigh<

I have not had a day off in weeks. There is pressure from every part of running a small business by yourself. There’s also dealing with disappointment and equally trying to not disappoint or let down anyone else….financial stuff, trying to smash 5 extra hours into every day (I’m not even joking) and this past few weeks it’s also been dealing with personal health stuff on multiple fronts which includes a lot of pain medicine which dulls and exhausts you.

But what I’m trying to say is, don’t let social media convince you that you’re not just simply doing your best, but also that you are not absoloutly smashing it. We can’t always be everything to everybody all at once, sometimes we can just be kind to ourselves.

It’s absoloutly mad to think I have been in this DJ education and community space as On The Rise for 13 years now. I always say I became a pro DJ in 99. So that’s almost half of that.

These pictures only go back 10 years. But me and started in his back room of his house. Then we moved to Ladbroke Grove. Then Old Street, then finally settled in Wembley where we still are and have been for over 10 years.

I actually started teaching for the DJ Academy waaaaaay before that. Shout outs to Andy. That was probably late 00’s. I honestly can’t remember.

It’s not been perfect if I’m honest. And still, pretty regularly I think about stopping and doing something else. But the sense of fulfilment I get from it is like nothing else.

Iv navigated a my business partner leaving (he’s still my best mate and I love him and we agreed it was the best love at the time) Iv navigated a pandemic, premises insecurity, global financial crisis, my own health issues and just the general s**t show that is modern life to still be here. And I’m proud of that.

I did that through trying to be something that my students could depend on. By pushing inclusion, representation and putting my DJ comunity first. I have had my days of self interest as a DJ. I decided a long time ago it was time for something else.

And here we are. Still. Still pushing. Still trying to inspire and people with their love of music through DJ’ing.

to moments over the last couple of years that epitomise what I have tried to build at On The Rise.

Comunity and humanity over everything. It’s one of the reasons I’m never going to be a rich man. Haha. But I am also extremely lucky to be able to make a living off of something I love.

Im not here to be a manager, an agent or only work with people I think I can make money out of. I’m here to show that this special thing we have, DJ’ing and music, doesn’t have to be competitive or toxic or confusing. I’m here to precipitate connections to both other people and your love of music and creativity through DJ’ing. If that’s in your room, at Pirate studios, at open decks or even if you do want to push for a career. The connection is the biggest thing.

I’m here to use my knowledge, wisdom, privilege and skill to uplift. Not to exploit.

That’s why I love what I do and I love and protect the comunity vibe and ethos.
