Stage II tuning

This involves updating the drive train in the car and upgrading Gears, Alex, Wheels, Tyers and Bushings

All of the part were purchased from pendle slot racing who hold a huge range of spares and parts

Used were
Slot.it Starter Kit Inline 28t 17.3x9.75mm Wheels (SIKK07c)

PCS F22 Slick Rear Tyres 20x10 Black
Pack of 4 slick rear tyres 20x10mm to fit various slot car wheels. The soft F22 tyre compound give excellent grip and are suitable for plastic and wood track surfaces.

These tyres can be used with a wide range of wheel sizes as they can be stretched onto larger diameter wheels.

To fit wheels of 15mm diameter (and taller) x 8-10mm wide, with a 5mm wide raised centre band around the wheel. i.e.

Slot.it Inline Brass Pinion 10 Teeth 5.5mm diameter (SIPI10)

Not needed but I also used
Slot.it Wheel Inserts RAYS Type 9 Spoke for Ø17.3mm Wheels

In addition to the parts the following tools are also needed
PSR Allen 0.9mm Allen key
Pinion Press/Removal Tool (GM665)

Once the new drive train was fitted, make sure the tyers are fixed to the rims of the wheels with a tiny bit of glue and then true them in the way previously described. then a dab of oil on the gears and Axel

I quite often get asked what cars do I use and how do ensure that they keep working and don't break. So the next couple of posts are dedicated to what cars I use and how I tune them. There are club racers out there that are much better than myself. But for me it's not about outright speed, it's about durability and performance for novices.

I only ever use the Scalextric super resistant range as they are simple to fix and generally come with a single piece plastic moulded body that stands up quite well to knocks and bangs.

Over the years they have made a large range of cars which are generally very good value for money. In this series I will using a Porsche Boxster.

The first thing I do is remove the magnet which while it makes the cars slower means that when they do come off of the track they are less likely to break and hurt someone if they inadvertently get hit by one of the cars.

The second thing is to ensure that the tyres are round, which is a bit of an odd thing to say, given they are on the wheels. But even very small differences in how the wheels and tyres were made result in them not being 100% round (true)

Running the car backwards on a sheet of sandpaper will ensure that your tyres are nice and round.

The Scalextric video https://youtu.be/nod0pK00zvU?t=325 shows you how to do this.

We always get asked, "How long did it take to set that up?"

This was about two and a half hours.

We had the privilege of doing an event for the British Paralympic swimming team organised by Aquatics GB. We wish them every success at the Paris 2024 games along with every other athlete competing.

It’s difficult to imagine a more competitive bunch of People than Paralympic athletes, I still have to fix Alice Tai's car
