In 1995, when I was 12 years old, my family moved from Scotland where I was born to England. My family was always highly difunctional and times of great change or stress things regularly got explosive - moving country caused weeks turmoil. Our house was like a war zone and that didn’t change in the long journey down to our new home. That same summer Gangsters Paradise was released and from the moment those I first heard those strings kick in I was hooked. I managed to get hold of a copied cassette of Coolio’s album and I listened to it on repeat until I knew every single word to every single track. This guy gave me an escape when my whole world was upside down and I felt completely displaced. I know I could never know the struggle that he faced and rapped about in his songs but for someone going through his own unique hardships, coolio’s music gave me so much comfort and passion for this genre that would later extend to NWA, Biggie, 2Pac, Snoop, Redman, Eminem, Jay z, Wu Tang.. the list is endless. Man I owe you so much that could never be repaid. Thanks for everything Rest In Power ✊🏼
