It's not just about throwing...

When people think “pottery,” they usually picture the wheel… but clay has so much more to offer! Hand building and sculpting let you slow down, play, and create in ways the wheel can’t.

One of our Open Studio members, Stephen, is an incredibly talented sculptor, making this incredible range of pieces inspired by Alice in Wonderland - we can't wait to see what he creates next!

Here’s a fantastic example of the brilliant work created by our regular students!

This contemporary stoneware jug was slab-built and decorated using a layered surface technique. After applying underglazes before the first (bisque) firing, strips of masking tape were used to create a geometric pattern before the piece was dipped in white glaze, revealing this crisp, modern design.

We had a family of dogs in the studio recently! They're owners wanted to capture their pawprints and chose different colours for each of their different personalities.

We love to welcome dogs to the studio and while you're having your experience, you can have their paw prints made into art! If you'd like to have your dog's paw prints done but can't find a timeslot that suits you on our calendar, please do get in touch. We love to do paw prints and can often do these at other times if needed.

If you'd like to bring your dog along to your experience, please do let us know before so we can make sure we've got the right space for you!

In our Weekly Classes, we love exploring different decorating techniques, and a firm favourite among our students is using coloured slips.

Coloured slips offer a level of predictability and control that makes them perfect for clean, crisp designs. Unlike glazes, which can flow and blend in unexpected ways, slips allow you to layer them to create bold, graphic patterns.

Here, students applied torn or cut newspaper to leather-hard clay to mask areas of the surface. Once the coloured slip is painted over the top and the paper is removed, a design is revealed underneath.

To take it even further, many artists enhance their slip work with sgraffito - scratching into the surface to add detail and texture, like the floral design pictured.

This technique works particularly well on slab-built or thrown forms, where there’s plenty of surface area to play with creative decoration.

This coil-built, slip-decorated bowl is simple elegance at its best.

Using stoneware, buff clay, this student used a former to create the main shape of this piece before smoothing and finishing the surface. From here, oak leaves were laid onto the inside of the bowl, with a layer of rich, cobalt blue slip painted over the top, revealing the clay beneath the leaves once they were removed.

Painting the veins onto the leaves really finishes the piece off wonderfully.
