On Monday, the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II will be held at . Here’s an interesting tid-bit about its history from my new book, Heaven on Earth.

Archbishop Thomas Becket’s murder in 1170 spawned, after his astonishingly rapid canonization in 1173, a meteoric saintly cult centred on Canterbury. It seemed that by contrast, Edward the Confessor’s reputation had limited appeal outside of Westminster. The watershed was the year 1245. Now the adult Henry III plunged in to become the sole and royal patron of the rebuilding project, his goal to construct his own ‘cathedral’ at Westminster, not only to eclipse all others, but, as a spiritual headquarters under his ‘special patron’ Saint Edward, to be the exemplar for his own kingship.
Although the king’s salvation was one of his key motives, there was also the rather less spiritual but potent matter of political rivalry with his Capetian brother-in-law, Louis IX of France. In 1239, Louis had taken possession of Christ’s putative Crown of Thorns. It would be the centrepiece of his collection of Passion relics, the most celebrated in Christendom, to which he added a fragment of the True Cross in 1241. Louis commissioned an extraordinary two-floored chapel – the Sainte-Chapelle – to be built to house the relics in the precincts of the royal palace on Paris’s Île de la Cité. In less than a decade, this astonishing structure took form. Undeterred by this emerging wonder, the ‘simple and God-fearing’ King Henry took on the competitive challenge and ordered a grand new shrine for the Confessor’s relics at Westminster.

Our Story

A celebration of eclectic and stimulating cultural encounters, The Festival in a Factory is hosted by iconic British designer Emma Bridgewater in the inspiring and creative setting of the canal-side, Victorian factory in the heart of The Potteries where Emma has manufactured her handmade and hand decorated pottery for over thirty years.

For three days in June (7-9 June 2018) author talks, panel discussions, hands-on workshops and live performances take place in surprising spaces from the old pottery warehouse to the cobbled courtyard.

From history to poetry, award winning fiction, memoirs and biographies to politics and food, environmentalism to heritage, plus great events for children and families too; the Festival is an eclectic and inspiring celebration of culture in the heart of this most creative of cities.

The Festival is curated by trustees designer and pottery manufacturer Emma Bridgewater and Tristram Hunt, Director of the Victoria & Albert Museum and former Stoke Central MP.
