Sometimes when you walk into a room as a DJ, you know you’re going to have a really good night! This was very much the case last night at David and Aileen‘s wedding. I was literally in the door 10 seconds and I text my Mrs and told her I was gonna have a great night tonight and that’s exactly what happened!
It’s like a DJ’s sixth sense. Sometimes you walk in and there’s just an amazingly happy friendly atmosphere and a real buzz before you’ve even started. Last night was certainly one of the most profound examples of this.
The last time I really remember this being so obvious was up at Bunchrew House Hotel near Inverness. I walked in the door and I just went this is gonna be a sensationally good night and it was it was. It was particularly good for me as the bride was an ELO fan which is my favourite band too.

Sadly, on the opposite side of the coin, we can also sense when there is a bad atmosphere. I always remember when I worked at room at the top in Bathgate which was a big nightclub back in the 90s. I used to speak to James, one of the doormen all the time and I would say to him “there’s gonna be trouble tonight” and I was always right. James asked me one night. How do you know this? I said “I just feel it.”
I think this is all part and parcel of being a good DJ that you can sense the mood in the room and play the right music to build an amazing atmosphere.

It’s just one of the skills picked up over the last 49 years.
