Peach, apricot, raspberry - I love how so many of the pinky colours are named after Summer fruits. These dahlias look good enough to eat, but I’ll just devour them with my eyes for the moment.

A beautiful mess.

I've returned from 2 weeks off with the family to discover so many treasures are blooming.

Namely, the dahlias have put on huge growth, and I'm kicking myself that I hadn't already done some staking when they were smaller. Some are on a bit of a lean, some are shading out other plants, some have big holes from sneaky caterpillars and earwigs that are hiding from me. But they are all looking great.

It will take a wee bit of work to get it on the straight and narrow but I'm looking forward to a few sessions in there next week. For the time being though, it's making the most of fun times with the kids in the sunshine for their last week of school holidays.

Thanks so much to my flower friend Lucy for taking such good care of my paradise.

It's no secret that I love talking flowers with anyone I meet. Not everyone necessarily wants to listen to me talk about flowers, but if you do, and you'd like to have a go at making a bowl or vase arrangement then you could come along to one of the flower workshops I'm cooking up for later in August.

They will be less focused on instruction about creating perfect arrangements, and more about having fun and playing with seasonal flowers. I'll give you as many of the tips and tricks I know, of course!

Stay tuned for further details - tickets will be released soon!

A bucket of Summer. 💗

The dahlias are starting to pop, but they're so tasty to the slugs and caterpillars that a lot of the first blooms have been munched. From now on I'll use my nifty organza bags to protect them as they bud up - nothing can get through those!

The sunflowers are unscathed. It certainly helps that they're a full six feet off the ground, so the slugs have too far to go to bother with chewing on them.

FYI - I'm on a wee break from flowers to spend time with the family but I'll be back in action around the 7th August.

Zinnias are a tough grow in the Highlands. But I keep trying because I don't take no for an answer sometimes.

These babies are in the tunnel - they like the heat, and with this sunshine we've had lately, they're loving life. A bit like this Aussie. Probably why I like them. We've got stuff in common.

It's school holidays, so of course I said to the kids, "Let's go to the polytunnel and look for baby frogs!". W, my 5 year old, 'helped' water the flowers by sticking the hose nozzle a few inches into the soil. My 8 year old collected a literal handful of baby frogs and made them a pond out of the lid of her water bottle.

I did a spot of weeding and other bits and bobs while keeping one eye and both ears on what the kids were up to. W declared, "It's a firework flower!" pointing to the bent wild carrot flower in front of his face. I took a good look at it with him and watched this lovely hoverfly make its way across the florets. They're so unassuming but so incredibly helpful to gardeners. Hoverfly markings are designed to mimic wasps and bees to deter predators, but they certainly don't have a sting. Bees get all the hype as pollinators and ladybirds get all the glory as aphid eaters, but hoverflies are just as fabulous as either of them.

Happy holidays kids!
