Curious Spirit Pictures

Curious Spirit Pictures I help purpose-led brands uncover the spirit and heartbeat of their story - so it’s truly understood, felt, and remembered by the people who matter. Safe.

I also lead Education-through-Storytelling workshops for teachers to boost engagement and retention I’ve never been comfortable with the word content. Content is beige. Forgettable. Made to be consumed and discarded. It fills space without saying anything—and for a long time, I felt myself being shaped into exactly that. At film school, my creative partner and I were pushed to imitate. Follow tren

ds. Replicate success. We were encouraged to make work that looked like everyone else’s, not stories that felt true. Later, in education, I saw the same thing from another angle: rigid frameworks, repeated curricula, information over curiosity. Stay in line. Don’t deviate. But when everyone follows the same line, you don’t stand out—you disappear. Everything changed when I lost my creative partner. Standing by his coffin, I made a promise to keep telling the stories we believed in. In the quiet that followed, I immersed myself in storytelling—how stories work, why they move us, how we learn through them, and why we remember them long after facts fade. It changed how I made films and how I taught. Engagement deepened. Ideas stuck. People leaned in. Curious Spirit Pictures grew from that belief: helping educators, organisations, and individuals create stories that connect, are felt, and remembered. Because content fills space. Stories change people.

Government Secrets. Shipwrecks. Death.

Have you ever walked the deadliest pathway in Britain?

Yesterday I joined Thames Estuary Man guided walking tours on a fantastic walk of The Broomway, a public highway between Wakering and Foulness Island that can only be reached at low tide.

As a video storyteller, I love an opportunity to hear some fascinating local stories and appreciate the amazing locations and this did not disappoint.

Big thank you to Kev for guiding us and Steve Baker for inviting me.

Check out ThamesEstuaryMan.co.uk for other local history walks.

They may forget figures, stats, and features... but they never forget a great story. 📚

In a horde of zombie-like marketing messages, your product's unique features or amazing service alone won't help you stand out.
It's a cliché, but as they say, people buy from people - so why not be your own great story? Because when you share your story, your brand stops being just another option and becomes a compelling, unforgettable message that stands out and connects.

Crafting memorable video stories requires a specialised blend of creative intuition, strategic narrative structure, and cinematic ex*****on.
That’s the core difference when you partner with a dedicated, award-winning Video Storyteller. You get direct personal access to a creative partner focused entirely on turning your core values into an enduring, purposeful visual experience - building video assets that move people and stick in your audience's minds for years to come.

Ever noticed the mystical-swirl, bloom and dissolve transformation you get when your pour milk into your tea or coffee in the morning?

When I was film school, I use to always go out and gather shots and little bits of footage and then spend hours editing and trying out new ideas and techniques to see how far I could push it (I did crash the entire Apple editing suite at university for doing that and it had to be replaced - oops!).
Like for an artist doodling, this "playing" allows me to explore new approaches, styles, pieces equipments and just gives me the room to be creative with no judgement.
This video doodle allowed me to experiment with recording in higher frame-rates (something I don't get to do often), as well as colour grading and creating depth with unsynchronised sound design.

So, this was the best shot I could get yesterday at the solar eclipse.

Yet it perfectly symbolises what I avoid as a video storyteller. Yes, it may have grabbed your attention, but there is nothing authentic, nothing real or meaningful about it. It’s a photograph that jumps on a trend, but ultimately will blend in and get lost amongst all the other photos and videos people are posting, and will only be relevant and interesting for a very short time.

Truth is that my pinhole projector didn’t work as well as I hoped, so I took this using a ball of tinfoil at the end of a kitchen roll tube. No AI involved, but still not authentic or truly meaningful! Sorry for the trick.

But this is not the case when you partner with a video storyteller, because I craft bespoke, authentic video stories that don’t just tell people what you do, they show who you are and why you do it. Meaningful video that emotionally connects with your audience, that captures the true heartbeat and spirit of your business, making you stand out for being unmistakably you! Because of all this, your video lasts longer, it sticks and remains a valuable asset as your business grows.

Invest in your story with a video storyteller.

The market doesn't need another carbon-copy brand video! 🎬
Formulaic, off-the-shelf videos all tend to blend together -looking, sounding, and feeling exactly like ten others in the very same sector.

You haven’t poured your heart, soul, and endless late nights into building and running a business just to have it flattened into a generic corporate template that grabs attention for a moment. The care you put into your work, the dedication of your team, and the pride you take in what you do for your customers are what truly set you apart - and hiding all of that behind a soulless, paint-by-numbers video simply doesn't do you or your story justice.

That’s the core difference when you partner with a dedicated Video Storyteller. Instead of transactional footage shoots or managing complex agency chains, I work directly alongside you to uncover the genuine human spark, the beating heart and spirit behind your brand. You receive an award-winning creative vision that combines deep narrative design with master craftsmanship, ensuring your business stands out as unmistakably you.

Shoot for the moon - literally.

This week I thought I would have a play and test pushing detail, balancing light, and colour through shooting the moon.

As a filmmaker I love trying to capture the moon as it has always fascinated me, not just for its visual power, but for what it represents in human storytelling:
A symbol of contrasting emotions, such as love, fear, and hope. An anchor for time, moving through its steady, natural cycles. A universal connector - a reminder that no matter where two people are, they can all look up at the same sky.

Whatever the moon means to you, its mystery, its power is undeniably inspiring.

Yes. I've added another Cat Video to the internet! Sorry

But those who know me well know that I struggle to switch off and because I constantly feel the need to be doing something, I often chill out by playing about learning and experimenting with different filming and editing techniques and approaches.

This shot of Oliver (fun fact: he starred in a short film that was screened on the Bradford Big Screen in City Park) was one that I couldn't resist grabbing and testing an alternative approach to natural colour grading in post-production.

I love the BBC's Horrible Histories and Jim Howick's "Shouty Man" sketches are such a fantastic, recognisable reference to those styles of adverts that we all know and have experienced.

People buy from people - not a feature checklist - People invest in stories.

In this month’s blog, I explore how small business and organisations can craft promotional films that truly matter. How to step away from chasing empty metrics, ditch the gimmick-copying, and stop making noisy adverts that feel a bit zombie-fied.

It’s great to learn and develop other creative skills. Ive actually had great fun this week, sitting and drawing alongside the little one. Apart from being a fantastic bonding and chilled experience, it’s allowed me to learn some new skills for storyboarding too. Thank you to Daniel at Kids Cartoon Academy 🌟
