🎶 10 YEARS OF MATT’S MOBILE MUSIC 🎶

To mark 10 years of being a Professional Mobile DJ, I thought it was time to tell the story of how this all began…and it actually starts 15 years ago…

CHAPTER 4: EMERGING FROM THE WILDERNESS

Having Graduated from University in July 2014, I had told myself that I had done my last DJ set and that life would take me in a different direction

However, over the next couple of years, there were a few occasions when my services were requested and I found myself on the decks again - even setting up entire rigs because apparently ‘Matt knew what to do!’ 😂

A few examples included being asked back to my former University town of Reading to DJ several times (including on one occasion organising an entire line up of student DJ’s for one room at the Students Union for a Halloween event) and sets at my ‘Summer Employer’ (Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways) End of Summer Parties - including one particularly memorable experience of bringing the party to a close in August 2016 🚂🙌

It was just after this that I decided that I could not resist a proper return to the world of DJing, but this time to see if I could earn some money out of it… 🎶

So a month or so later; I bought my first set of speakers, lights and a DJ Booth - Matt’s Mobile Music was born! 🔊

To be honest I really did not expect much, maybe a gig every month or so if I was lucky (as in all honesty , I had no real idea of how you go about starting out as a Professional Mobile DJ in terms of promoting yourself and getting gigs)

However, in turns out that still being involved in radio (as elsewhere I had got involved with Black Country Radio) had its advantages as the other people involved had contacts

By the end of 2016 I was already DJing several times a week in the run up to Christmas…

The rest they say is History!

And that’s the Four Part story of how Matt’s Mobile Music came in to being….the party has gone on for 10 years now and I hope many more will follow!

To mark 10 years of being a Professional Mobile DJ, I thought it was time to tell the story of how this all began…and it actually starts 15 years ago…

CHAPTER 3: WAS THE PARTY ALREADY OVER?

The final year at University had begun and the DJing opportunities came thick and fast, mostly through my involvement at Junction11 and the stations extra services and activities off-air. 💿

Throughout my final year though, I did keep thinking; is this the end of the DJing? It had been fun, but I just could not see myself carrying on after University finished 🤔

By third year I held the position of brand manager of station, so was managing the stations own image/brand and internal brands, along with collaborating with other brands. 🔊

This did actually lead me to working with fellow students who had crafted serious DJ mixing skills over many years. I had figured out that I wasn’t the most talented mixer in the world, but that my strength as a DJ was being able to read a crowd and be an entertainer. I got introduced to lots of different types of equipment during this time, adding to my experience in general.🎤

Towards the end of my final Uni year, I did what I considered a ‘farewell tour’, as again I did not think I would carry it on after University

The ‘big one’ being when the Student Union’s Entertainment Manager asked me as a ‘thank you’ for all that I had done over the last few years, to open the Main Stage at that years Summer Ball with a 90 mins set, ahead of the likes of Katy B, Sigma and Wilkinson performing later in the night 🎉🍻

To this day, this is by far the biggest stage and biggest sound system I have ever had the privilege of being on and using. A huge privilege and felt like a suitable conclusion to my DJing career and my time at University 😔

In reality, I ended up doing a few more DJ sets at smaller events in the weeks that followed, but then I really thought it was over… 😂

So University life ended, I graduated and I was planning to leave DJing behind

However, the story did not end here after all…. ☺️

CHAPTER 2: THE TUNES START TO FLOW…

So having done my first bit of DJing (in a very loose sense!) towards the end of my first year at University, second year beckoned

Having been elected to the position of Head of Marketing at Junction11 for my second year and with the new Station Manager keen to get the station out and about and seen more off-air through providing PA and Music to University events and providing presenters to DJ at both Union Nights and various university society events, more opportunities to soundtrack events were on the cards. 🔊

In my role as Head of Marketing I was expected to lead from the front with this… 👍

It certainly kept me busy! But it did teach me lessons in reading rooms and creating suitable vibes in a variety of different environments

On-air, I ended up presenting the Wednesday Pre-Union night show by the start of second term that year. Again, it taught me how to best curate a night-out soundtrack 📻 🎶

One very notable event came at the end of second year, when the RUSU Summer Ball came round again….when once again Junction11 was asked to host the Student Sound Stage. 🎉

I was given the closing slot of 02:50am - 03:40am.

I decided to do a ‘Back To School’ set, basically an excuse to play loads of cheesy tunes from the 90’s and 00’s!

I Wasn’t really expecting much, but by 03:30am, the room was so full that I was asked to carry on an extra 20 mins!!! Lots of the students there cheered and clapped at the end to show their appreciation 👏

It was in that moment, standing there looking out at everyone, I realised that perhaps I was actually quite good at this DJing malarkey?!?!?🤔

Looking back, Second year at Uni had taught me a lot about reading rooms and situations as well as making decisions and preparing properly…

The final year of Uni beckoned and I had been ‘promoted’ to Brand Manager at Junction11….so what next on my DJing Journey?!?!?

CHAPTER 1: The First Beat is laid down… 💿

The origins of Matt’s Mobile Music can be traced back to Freshers Week 2011 at the University of Reading, when I signed up to be involved with Junction11 Radio (the Universities Student Radio station)….

Now I can talk forever about the effect that being involved in student radio had on my life, but I’ll try to stay on topic…

There were two key events towards the end of my first year at University that very much started my interest and potential in Mobile DJing

The first was at that year’s RUSU Summer Ball (an annual event that would play a further key part in my DJing development over the following years), as Junction11 hosted the Student Sound Stage in Mojo’s at the Union. 🎤

I co-presented the opening slot - it was a weird mix of a live outside broadcast and DJ set - naturally though, as it was early in the evening, nobody was really there! 😂

The second was a 45 mins (secret) set at the End of Sibly Hall/Sibfest Party about a week later. (For some context, Sibly Hall was my Hall of Residence during first year and it was also the Hall’s last year in use before demolition - so a suitable farewell party had been arranged). 😂

My radio show on Junction11 had gained a bit of a following amongst my fellow Sibly Hall residents during my first year

I was given about 2 hours notice and to be honest, it was more a live version of my radio show, (I definitely remember playing Carly Rae Jensen - Call My Maybe as my last song), but I do consider it as my first ever DJ set 🙌

(The event was actually headlined by Brookes Brothers - remember them?!) 🤔

At the end of my first year at University, I was also elected to Head of Marketing at Junction11 - which meant I would be out an about a lot more with the station and playing music in places other than on the radio in second year…

The fire had been ignited…. 🔥

🎉 10 YEARS OF MATT’S MOBILE MUSIC. 🎶

Today marks a whole 10 years of the creation of Matt’s Mobile Music! A whole decade of Professional Mobile DJing! 😮

Seems an appropriate time to give a big shout out and thank you to all who have supported and booked us in that time. Some of whom have become friends and connections for life

As some of you will know though, the story actually started about 15 years ago….over the next few days, to mark 10 years, I aim to share that story with all of you - think of it as an origins story! 😂
