MOB performing their arrangement of "Wild Mountain Thyme", (also known as "Purple Heather" and "Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?") is a Scottish/Irish traditional folk song. The lyrics and melody are a variant of the song "The Braes of Balquhither" by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774–1810) and Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith (1780–1829), but were adapted by Belfast musician Francis McPeake (1885–1971) into "Wild Mountain Thyme" and first recorded as this, by his own family in the 1950s. The earliest recording with the Scottish title was in 1907 by Alma Gluck. Notable recordings include those by The Byrds, Thin Lizzy, Long John Baldry, Bert Jansch and more recently the 2023 Rufus Wainwright version 😊

MOB performing their arrangement of "The Parting Glass" a Scottish traditional song from the 17th century, often sung at the end of a gathering of friends. It has also long been popular in Ireland and modern versions reflect strong Irish and North American influences. It was the most popular parting song sung in Scotland before Robert Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne". Recorded versions throughout the years include those by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, The Dubliners, and recent recordings include the 2023, Boygenius collaboration with Ye Vagabonds who released their cover, paying tribute to the late SinΓ©ad O'Connor, an Irish singer and activist who had also recorded the song and who had died earlier that year. All proceeds were donated to the Aisling Project, SinΓ©ad O’Connor Estate's charity of choice. 😊

MOB performing their arrangement of "Barbara Allen", a traditional folk ballad that became very popular in England, Ireland, Scotland and America. Although not a stage song, the first written reference to it occurred in 1666 in The Diary of Samuel Pepys, where Pepys praises it after watching a stage performance sung by an actress 😊

A truly beautiful night of the most enchanting live music by MOB. So good to have them back here again, albeit five-sixths of their usual line-up. But still, we had 5 superbly talented musicians, clearly loving the music that they were playing, and singing in sweet harmony with eachother. Two delightful sets of traditional Irish, English and American folk music, with a couple of perfectly fitting contemporary songs nestling in-between. Mother and Son Esther and Joe, so vocally in tune with eachother, Esther playing washboard and Joe on a bodhran. Beautiful fiddle playing from Kate, amazing banjo and accordion by Stephen, and perfectly stated, joyous guitar from Mark. Plus outstanding vocal harmonies by them all. The hugest of thanks to Esther Brennan, Joe Brennan-Hulme, Kate Barfield, Stephen Liddle and Mark Burke, for coming to play for us tonight 😍
Massive thanks also to tonights wonderful audience. Great to see such a huge turnout for this exceptionally beautiful gig tonight. Good to see so many of you listening intently, and some of you singing along a little too. Your support for our live music, and your appreciation for the musicians themselves is very much appreciated 😍
As usual, some videos from tonight will be uploaded onto this page sometime on Wednesday. Until then, thank you and goodnight everyone 😘😴
