Funny evening Saturday evening because I wasn’t sure whether what I was going to do would work.
My main genre to play is soulful house music, and whilst it frustrates me that there are very few places to do that down our way, that is just the way it is and it’s why I get so much joy from being back on the radio.
Rita’s have always been very trusting these past five and a half years and I’ve played a lot of house music there, but I recognise not only that the crowd has shifted more to an R&B and UK garage as their preference. I didn’t want to disappoint people, nor did I want to dig in when requests came for non-house genres.
So Saturday I decided to make a much firmer switch into the soulful genres that helped form my musical taste growing up - soul, R&B, disco, funk, hip hop and yes some house.
And I think it worked, both as a body of music, but most importantly, and the thing that I feel physically in my chest, the customers seemed to like to too, and they were of all ages.
Probably several lessons there, even at this ripe old age 😉
