I was proud to listen in to this month's speaker at Ladiesfirst Professional Development Kerry Martin.
Kerry is the co-founder of two incredible organisations - Smiling Families Charity and Vibe25 Radio inspired by her own traumatic birth experience of her son.
Beyond the support of close family, Kerry and husband Paul found very few opportunities to connect with others facing similar circumstances. Determined to change this, they began organising family fun days across the Midlands, creating safe, welcoming spaces where families affected by illness could relax, connect and make special memories together.
Alongside events, the charity offers support networks that foster friendship, understanding and shared experience.
Kerry is a qualified teacher and is currently training as a family counsellor to further strengthen the charity’s support services. Paul is a qualified trainer who regularly delivers sessions to NHS staff, helping to improve practice and procedures through lived experience.
The charity aims to create more fun, inclusive events for children and parents affected by illness, bringing families together and reducing isolation.
They are also expanding their online forums to offer access to professional advice and strengthening partnerships with external organisations to ensure families receive the support they need.
At the heart of Smiling Families has a simple goal: to bring smiles to children and parents during difficult times, while strengthening and supporting the whole family unit.
Thank you Kerry for stepping into the speaker's role today - and please everyone, do help raise any awareness you can by sharing posts and spreading the word of mouth.
I haven't known her long (and today was the first time I'd heard her story in detail) but, despite everything, Kerry always has a smile on her face - and is one of the most incredible women I've ever met. I am so proud to be on this journey, even in small part, with her. 🥰
