Does anyone else love conkers? To me they are still the most precious shiny treasure, hiding in dew drenched grass and then slipping secretly into a pocket for later comfort. Holding it in the palm of my hand and turning it around, smoothing the surface with my fingers gives an almost meditative sensory calmness and reassurance. A pocket hug perhaps. Children love them too, stuffing them into bulging pockets, each one a new delight and another essential keepsake of a visit to a conker 'factory'. The luck of having one such tree in the garden! And oh the delight of a winning conker in a smashing fight! There is also great satisfaction in lining them up - a miniature battleforce of nature - graded by size and plumpness or spiralling round in an infinite snail. My two year old loved to plop each mahogany bun, one by one into a muffin tin for a tea party whilst my five year old made conker soup with a sprinkle of dried leaves to taste. The possibilities of the humble horse chestnut are endless and provide peace and a sense of order on a sunny autumn afternoon.
