Candid vs posed wedding photography… it’s rarely one or the other.
Most of the time, it’s a mix — and honestly, that’s exactly how I like it. While I’ll always guide and set things up when needed, the real magic tends to live in those in-between moments. The laughs after the “perfect” pose, the reactions you didn’t realise were happening… those are the money shots every single time.
And if I’m being totally honest? Some of those “candid” photos come from a little bit of direction first — then stepping back and letting the moment unfold naturally.
It’s always completely dependent on the couple too. My job is to read the room, suss out how you’re both feeling, and adapt. If things feel a bit awkward, we move — I’ll get you walking, chatting, answering something silly, maybe even having a little dance. There’s always a way to bring out something real.
These two were SO much fun… almost too much fun 😝 I had to actively dodge the constant silly faces they were pulling at each other between shots.
So when it comes to “candid or staged?” — don’t feel like you have to choose. The best galleries always have a bit of both.
And a little word of warning: try not to overload your day with group shots. 10–15 is more than enough (20 max!), and it’ll save you from stress, sore cheeks, and a lot of very bored guests.
Trust me on that one.
