🌱BALSAM 'BASHERS' URGENTLY NEEDED🌱
Unfortunately, the Peninsula is becoming overwhelmed with Himalayan Balsam; June is an ideal month for tackling this invasive plant.
Please help us to eradicate it...if everyone pulled out a few stems each time they went for a walk it would make such a difference 🙏

Balsam bashing is a hands-on conservation practice used to control the spread of Himalayan balsam (a highly invasive, non-native plant) by manually pulling the shallow roots out of the ground. The goal is to clear the plant before its seed pods form and explode.
How to do it correctly:
• Identify the plant: Look for tall stalks (up to 3 meters), pink, bonnet-shaped flowers, and reddish stems.
• Pull it out: Grab the base of the stem and firmly pull it straight up. The roots are shallow, so it should come out easily.
• Destroy the root: Ensure the plant will not resprout. Snap the shallow root/stem base or fold it over.
• Leave it safely: Pile the pulled plants loosely on-site so they can compost into the ground without spreading. Do not transport the waste off-site, as dropping pieces in transit can spread new seeds.

June is a special month for UK bumblebees – the Big Eight are joined by more of our rare and less common species 💛

👑 This month, most of these rare and less common queens will produce their first daughters – the workers 💼

🎱 For the Big Eight, many queens and their worker daughters will be joined by new males 🚹

🎨 CALLING ALL CHILDREN & CREATIVE PERSONS 🎨
As part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful Campaign, we are looking for young budding artists who can help teach the grown ups about litter!
Our latest efforts have sadly identified three main areas of contention;
1. Discarded fishing line left on beaches and in laybys.
2. Rubbish thrown from vehicles
3. Rubbish left in laybys or on beaches by tourists / campers

Since these adults are obviously uneducated when it comes to the environment then what better way to teach them than through the talents of the younger generation.

We are looking for children and / or adults to design a piece of artwork which focuses on one of the 3 points mentioned above, which can get the message across! Whether a colourful poster, a photo, sculpture, video etc, any form of artwork accepted.
All designs shall not only be showcased around the Peninsula but will be given media coverage too.
Please hand in all artwork to Cranford, Ferry rd, Rosneath, G84 0RS. Along with your name, age and contact details (parents contact details if child is under 16)

Note to parents: one of the most disconserting finds from the litter picks is the sheer amount of discarded alcohol bottles and cans that have been thrown from vehicles!
The idea that so many persons are still drinking and driving through our villages on a regular basis is terrifying!
So if there any older children or adults who wish to take on this topic and create something that will probably have to be a bit more shocking! Then please help as this hidden problem urgently needs addressed!

💎 BEAUTIFUL SCOTLAND 60th BIRTHDAY 💎
As you may know we have been invited to enter 'Beautiful Scotland' this year.
It is also their 60th Birthday! 🎂🥳
The judges shall be coming in August and we would like to include something to celebrate the 60th diamond celebration 🤔
Does not have to be plant related; however, would be nice to do something that involves the community....ideas please 🙏🙏🙏

🌺 MORE STUFF! 🌺
We managed to get a few more things done this week, despite the weather!
New planters made by Derek and the boys at the bottom of Peaton rd.
And pergola which belonged to Gilda (R.I.P) and kindly donated by her daughter Dawn which now has a new home in Clynder, thank you to Laura and Connor for painting and Bryan for rebuilding it.
And lastly thank you to Moray, Tam & Bryan for removing some of the Himalayan Balsam. Thank you to everyone involved 🤗
