I've watched hundreds of events unfold, and honestly, the first 18 minutes tell me everything.
Here's what I notice that signals whether your guests will have a blast or awkwardly hover by the bar all night:
1. Are people making eye contact across the room?
If guests are scanning faces and catching eyes, they're open to mingling. If they're locked onto their phones or staring at their drinks, they're in self-protection mode.
2. Is anyone asking a question to someone new?
The first brave soul who leans in and says something to a stranger sets the tone. If no one's broken that seal by 15 minutes in, you've got clumps forming fast.
3. Are small groups shifting and expanding?
Healthy mingling looks like groups of 2-3 that grow to 4-5, then split and reform. Frozen circles of the same faces? That's the kiss of death for energy.
4. Is there laughter that pulls others in?
When someone laughs and heads turn toward the sound, that's magnetic energy. Silence or polite chuckles? Your event needs a spark, fast.
This is exactly why I'm obsessed with bringing casino tables to events. Roulette, blackjack and poker give your guests something to do together, not just stand around hoping someone else breaks the ice.
It keeps everyone occupied, gets people mingling naturally, and creates those moments where strangers become friends over a shared hand of cards.
No awkward clumps. No one left out. Just genuine fun and excitement from the moment we set up.
Save this if you're planning an event and want to make sure your guests have an unforgettable time, not an uncomfortable one.
