Valantines Day Flowers
I usually stay fairly quiet around valentines day and the flowers used to celebrate the day, however I've been asked many times over the past week or two, if customers can order flowers, the answer is 'no I'm afraid not - as I only sell seasonal flowers' or being questioned on why I don't sell flowers for Valentines day, so I thought I'd share my view on this subject.
So as I mentioned I grow seasonal flowers, and I don't use any artificial light or heat to help me do this, meaning the flowers I sell are grown here at the farm, true to the season in which they would naturally flower in the UK. Which removes me completely from the Valentines Day market.
However there are some wonderful British wholesalers who are producing lovely flowers for Valentines Day, such as Smith & Munson & Crossland Flowers, both are well worth looking into if you wish to support British growers this Valentines day.
The reason you won't find anyone selling British grown roses at this time of year is because Roses don't flower until May in the UK. Meaning all of the roses you will see in supermarkets and florists are imported for Valentines Day, roughly 8 million roses are imported into the UK, just for Valentines Day.
The impact of that is huge not only from a carbon footprint point of view but also the damage being done to the land by all the chemicals used to grow and then transport these flowers.
If roses are a must for you this Valentines Day, then why not consider buying a rose bush for the garden, then you will have beautiful roses every year, is a great place to start your search.
