Hello Sound poets,

It has been brought to our attention that some local poets have been asked to create workshops, perform and support festivals in the area for free despite funding.

Please note we will never ask poets to work for free while we have the funding to support you. It will be you first, us second as a team from now until we can no longer run. To create, curate and exist as an artist takes time and we see your unique value.

As a festival we focus on funding our local communities. We will always encourage Plymouth poets to be respected as a significant part of the arts that shape our city.

Thank you for the wonder and passion you created in 2024 and 2026 and we look forward to another celebration of city poetry with Sound: Plymouth Poetry Festival in 2028!

Thank you to POP Plymouth Octopus, Plymouth City Council and Arts Council England for supporting local artistic communities to convene and grow in a challenging economic climate for creatives.

Hi there!

In the wake of a wonderful 2026 offering, the Sound team are exploring how we enshrine the values of ethical community opportunities as part of Sound: Plymouth Poetry Festival. As a result we are proposing a Code of Ethics that is followed by us, the founders, any stakeholders and the extended team working within the festival going forward. This will ensure the focus remains on what our community want, how to approach inclusion, the ecological impacts of running a festival and, crucially, where funding goes.

This is where you come in -

We are opening up this code to input and suggestions from our community to ensure your voices are heard in the process.

If you're keen to attend a meeting to further discuss this, optional times have been given below. The hope is that we can collaborate collectively and shape publicly who we will be and what we will represent to the arts scene at large.
