At 75, Lynne has been part of the Mytime Active family for over 25 years. For the past 15 years she's dedicated 18+ hours every week, volunteering as one of our most beloved Primetime Buddies supporting our over-60s community through our specialist Primetime programme.

What makes Lynne truly special? As part of her Buddy role, Lynne completed dementia-friendly training delivered by MIND in Beckenham; all Mytime Active Buddies and many of the Primetime team and Mytime Active staff and instructors are Dementia Friends. The training helped Lynne better understand the many forms dementia can take and how to support members with patience and empathy. She's learned to listen without judgment, offer patience when the same questions are asked repeatedly, and most importantly, to treat everyone as the individuals they are.

Lynne explains: “It's important to treat people living with dementia as ordinary people and not make an issue out of it. It's so important for people with dementia to continue classes – it makes them feel normal and gives them something to think about.

“I love helping people and if they have any problems they do talk to me about them. When I go on holiday, people tell me they’ve missed me – it really means something,” she says. “Primetime feels like a big family. We look out for each other and I love being part of that.”

Thank you, Lynne, for being the smiling, familiar face that so many of our Primetime members look forward to seeing each week.

Donation Update:

We held our second bowling session for the Bromley Youth Service on Wednesday evening. The two sessions have been so well received - we have had over 80 young people attend. 🥳

The sessions have provided a safe place for young people to come together and take part in a positive activity that they would normally not have access to. Most of the young people come from low income families and hard-to-reach communities. Many of the young people have not been bowling before, simply because they can't afford it.

The Youth worker who facilitated the young people from Bromley Youth Service said "The sessions have given them hope and the encouragement not to give up. They’ve also helped break down barriers between young people from different parts of the borough—many of whom would never usually have met. It’s been incredible to see how these sessions are building confidence and promoting healthier lifestyles". 🥰

We wanted to extend a huge thank you to everyone who took part in one of our Zumbathon events at Crofton Halls and the Spa Beckenham. We hope you agree that these sessions are hugely beneficial to our community.

Jessica, a 46-year-old mum of three from Penge, is redefining what it means to be a survivor. After being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in May 2023, Jessica faced 20 weeks of chemotherapy, major surgery and radiotherapy - all while supporting her three children.

But Jessica's story doesn't end with treatment. Like many cancer survivors, she found herself asking ‘Who am I now?’ as she navigated the physical and emotional aftermath - early menopause, chronic fatigue, brain fog and daily joint pain.

That's where our 12 week FreshStart programme made a difference. FreshStart is our supervised programme of physical activity for those not meeting the recommended levels of activity and recovering from illness or living with a long term medical condition.

Referred to our FreshStart programme via Princess Royal University Hospital, Jessica joined our 12-week course in June 2025. “The FreshStart course is really helpful,” Jessica shares. “The instructors take time to explain how to use the gym equipment and appreciate what my body has been through and what I am capable of achieving.”

Now Jessica is taking her recovery even further, swimming 10 miles throughout July at our Spa at Beckenham pool to raise money for Breast Cancer Now.

Jessica says: “This challenge is very personal, I'm learning to live again, I'm learning to move again, I'm learning who I am now and what and who I want to be in the future.”

At Mytime Active, we're proud to support Jessica and others on their wellness journeys. You can find out more about Jessica’s story and support her fundraising here:

James was an avid rugby player, who discovered his love for Zumba at Mytime Active in his 60s. But when dementia began affecting his memory, everything changed for him and his wife Barbara.

That’s when Mytime Active’s Paracise classes became their lifeline. With dementia-trained Primetime Buddies providing support, James could continue dancing while Barbara finally had precious moments of respite, sitting outside the class with a cup of tea, watching her husband do what he loved.

Barbara says: “James loved those classes. We were made to feel very welcome and both looked forward to that time. From my point of view, because there were Primetime Buddies in the room and they always took such good care of James, it gave me a break. I could sit outside of the class in peace and have half an hour to myself.”

As James’ condition progressed, the Mytime Active team suggested he replaced Paracise to our seated strength and stability classes. The instructors modified exercises so he never felt left out. When he became too unsteady, even when seated, Barbara joined him on the back row, doing as much as they could together.

Barbara says: “Everyone at Primetime knew his name and we always felt very welcomed. The instructors were great at adapting the exercises to his needs, so he never felt like he wasn't participating. For James to be able to stay active and social, when dementia can be so isolating, was such a bonus for us both.”

James attended his final class just weeks before passing away this spring. Even at his funeral, the Primetime programme was mentioned multiple times in his eulogy, because dance was so important to the couple and was how Barbara and James first met, and dance stayed with them until the very end.

“James is a great loss. He is missed in our classes by members, buddies and by me. I could always catch James’ eye in the class when the song ‘When you're Smiling’ came on,” says Ann Wilbourn, Primetime Manager.
