It's Fete Day!!! Come say hi!

We are nearly all loaded to head to Mundford Village Fete to get setting up.

They FOMS team have organised the most amazing day out for everyone today, just look at that bursting line up of displays and food vendors and we know there are lots of amazing local stalls too!

We feel we may be approaching a closed books approach soon until the dahlia grace us. With the devastation the drought and heat has caused to the field it isn't looking very flowery and we would never supply sub par, damaged, sun bleached or unhappy blooms.
This is not an easy decision, tears have been shed and overall feeling particularly fragile.

Its been an incredibly difficult season so far, if any of you garden, whether amateur or expertly, we are sure you will also be feeling it too and we stand in solidarity with you.

This is not how we saw this season going, all we can do is keep what we can going and prioritise as best possible. Navigating this has been difficult to say the least.

On the back of this, we are cutting to dry continually at the moment.
We have a stall at Mundford Fete on Saturday and hoped to have lots of fresh goodies, however this may not be the case sadly.

What we will have is;
🌸 Dried and fresh lavendar bunches
🌸 Dried larkspur bunches
🌸 Dried craft boxes which can either be used for crafting or a mini dried bouquet in a bud vase (extra pennies if you'd like bud vases to arrange them into)
🌸 Gypsophilla wreaths on 10" handmade straw bases and we hope to make some smaller ones tomorrow
🌸 A teaser into a Halloween workshop
🌸 Information about Wild Bloomers Club
🌸 Children's DIY Nature Wands
🌸 Herby bunches - use them fresh, dry them, use them to help keep flies away...lots of possibilities.
🌸 Christmas wreath base examples which can be ordered in single units or bulk, a premade luxury wreath example and an example of a DIY kit that were popular last year!
🌸 A smile and a passionate seasonal, sustainable local grower who loves all things nature and flowers. Come say hi!

If there is any time to support a small local grower, now would be a pretty great time 🫣

Recapping the last 7 to 14 days. Sit tight! If only this list was exhaustive of our chaotic lives 🀣.

πŸ‘°β€β™€ A field wander for a prospective bride next July.
πŸ’ Gift bouquets (didn't manage to picture all)
🀩 An exciting opportunity we are keeping close to our chests for now and have only shared with those close.
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Going to see Mrs Wild's sisters' new allotment and helping identify thug weeds and advice for clearing, soil health and composting. Bringing home poppy seed heads to dry and some grasses 😁.
Friday Flowers at Thomas B Bonnett
Market bunches at Parnells Plants
❀️ we are so grateful for the ongoing support from both, they make sales and getting us seen that little bit easier. Their support means more than they realise.
πŸ“‹ Part time job hunting.

πŸͺ£ Our first subscription bucket delivered and a lovely message and picture sent of the recipients masterpiece. A much needed pick me up message when things are tough right now.

πŸ† Finally cutting our British Flowers Week winners bucket; the winner happened to be a very close friend, so she got the perk of coming and choosing her own while Mrs Wild cut, a good chin wag, a walk of the field and seeing the devastation first hand from the weather too. We love being able to show people around, usually in better circumstances.

🌱 Seed harvesting - usually we would leave a handful of each variety but largely, most varieties flushed too fast and all at once so we will have an abundance of seed this time, yes this helps us keep costs down on seed purchases (yes we are seed addicts and it doesn't stop us spending on new varieties, types and colours!) but equally, it means loss of fresh flower sales which are worth much more than the seed.

♻️ Bed clear down - fed up of unsightly dead annuals that should still be going for at least another 2 months, once we've got a recycled container full of seeds, we are clearing the beds, laying the plants to break down back into the earth, layering with alpaca poo from Rowen Barn Alpacas and covering in card.
🌟 If you have any LARGE card please let us know. For context our beds are 4ft wide. Beds range from 15ft long to 33ft 🌟

βœ‚οΈ Propagation - taking as many rooted cuttings as we can from some of our perennials, because to be quite frank, they're barely hanging in there and were a huge financial outlay even as plug plants. It's taken 2 years to be able to have anything properly usable from those tiny plugs , it may mean, if the cuttings are happy and we can get them through, we will be waiting another 2 years for a handful of stems off of each if we are lucky πŸ˜ͺ. But it will hopefully prevent the need to re purchase them all!!

🦡 A kick up the bum has been given, we are working on the bones of The Wild Bloomers Club which has always been a long term goal as a branch of Wild&Wonky Blooms and other business plans including possible workshops, we've got to pull our fingers out with the state of Rubble Corner and look at our bi products and more.
🌟 If you would like a copy of the information booklet for the children's Wild Bloomers Club including details, policies, terms and conditions and the questionnaire, pop us a message with your email and we will email it across. The questionnaire will be instrumental in developing the dates and times and we would love feedback 🌟

😴 Like many other small growers right now, we are taking everything a day at a time. Sleepless nights, ranting to friends and tears, quite a few. The weather has caused some serious financial losses, including hours and hours of our time, dedication and care. The British weather is unpredictable, we work with it the best we can, but it has been very much against us this year and the bareness of the field, not to be dramatic, is soul destroying. The best we can hope for at this point is keeping the dahlias going for dahlia bunches and not losing our expensive tubers and cuttings.

❀️ The pictures are bitter sweet and we can identify many that in a short space of time (2 weeks) are no longer usable.

I think the weather app needs to address its "grab an umbrella" message, less than 2mm is not umbrella weather, it's dance in the rain and wish for more, even a few mm would be something. Don't be fooled by the rain forecast Wednesday either, another less than 2mm!

Sadly, we are slowly going to be clearing beds soon, prioritising where water is needed most (dahlia and perennials). Not the season we hoped for, but we are propogating rooted cuttings of perennials, seed harvesting as soon as dry and viable, drying flowers (lots!) and sowing biennials for next season.

Adaption always springs to mind. Adapt, overcome, perseverance. It's difficult to adapt when last season was quite frankly very wet and this season has been very dry, hot and just not pleasant for little growers like ourselves. Despite the wet last season was a total boom and wonderful otherwise.

We will be ordering more IBC to increase our rainfall storage and when clearing beds we will be going thick with the organic matter as best possible and the all important cardboard on top to keep the weeds at bay. If you have any big cardboard boxes, please do give us a shout as we will need plenty!

Woops! We forgot to share these today, we've been busy bees with our Wild Bloomers sports day and early birthday celebrations for Mrs Wild's mamma and then off to the field to dead head, a smidge of watering (using what little we have left for the most poorly looking) and cutting for tomorrow's bunches.

Two gift bouquets, two budgets, two totally different styles.

Mrs Wild has always had a love hate relationship with two colours in particular and doesn't tend to grow a lot of either. Yellow and red.
Red still hasn't and likely won't warm on us but the yellows - with whites and peaches together are just so dreamy! If you zoom in hard enough you can see our new alstromeria, purchased late last season and we've just pulled all the usable stems for this and tomorrow 🫣.

We do however lean a lot towards pink, today complimented with electric blue eryngium and brodeia.

Thank you for your orders for today, whether gift bouquet or doorstep bunches! We hope your recipients loved them, if the doorsteps were a treat to yourselves we hope they've brightened up a space in your homes πŸ₯°.
