Newry Chamber Music

Launching our new season this Thursday (8th Oct) with Miniatures - an evening of music, poetry and prose with The Fews Ensemble, broadcaster John Toal and soprano Mary McCabe.

Join us to hear the rhythmic drive and infectious energy of Jesse Montgomery's Strum, and discover how Tchaikovsky's beautiful Andante Cantabile provides the perfect musical response to Chekhov's evocative word painting.

Reflect on Rilke's poetic and romantic writing while listening to Webern's exquisite Langsamer Satz. Hemingway takes us into the Spanish bullring, accompanied by Turina's La Oración del Torero, while Shelley's The Sunset and Emily Dickinson's By the Sea provide the texts for Respighi's Il Tramonto and Golijov's How Slow the Wind.

And to finish, Piazzolla's fiery Four for Tango brings the evening to an exhilarating close! All in the intimate surroundings of our NCM Hub at The Quays, Newry where you can experience this wonderful music and storytelling up close.

This Sunday we have the great privilege of performing Messiaen's profound work The Quartet for the End of Time at Carlingford Heritage Centre.
It is a piece that is by now firmly established in the Fews Ensemble's repertoire and has a special place in our hearts.
If you are unfamiliar with this work we would love you to come and spend an hour with us on Sunday afternoon and allow yourself to suspend time and just be in this unique sound world of Oliver Messiaen who heard music in colour. It is an extraordinary piece of art music and Carlingford Heritage is the perfect backdrop in which to perform it.
Here is a podcast from a performance we gave at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin in March 2025 if you want to get ahead and hear some the background of the piece and the extraordinary circumstances of how it came into being.

We look forward to seeing you!
