New memorial letterbox at Whitley Bay offers comfort to grieving families

What a wonderful idea, bringing everyone together in a celebration of life.

Our Bereavement Service is holding a special memorial service on Wednesday 13 May at 2pm, at Tynemouth Crematorium — open to anyone who has lost a loved one, whatever your faith or belief.

The service lasts around 30 minutes, with light refreshments afterwards. Guests will also receive a hand-made paper butterfly seeded with wildflowers — to take home and plant, or leave in the Garden of Remembrance.

The month of March marks 6 years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK and subsequently the first lockdown.

This year the COVID-19 day of reflection will be held on the 8th March 2026 as an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives to the pandemic, support the bereaved, and recognize the sacrifices made by frontline workers and volunteers.

In my local borough of North Tyneside there will be a short memorial service held at 11am on 6th March at Silverlink Biodiversity Park where Elected Mayor Karen Clark will mark the occassion with a short speech and wreath laying at the COVID-19 memorial. All are welcome to join and take time to pause and reflect on the personal impact that COVID-19 had on us all.

Well done Scotland for being the first country in the UK to legalise resomation!

Resomation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis or water cremation, is a more eco-friendly alternative to flame cremation or burial. It uses water, heat, and potassium hydroxide to accelerate natural decomposition over 3–4 hours, leaving behind bone fragments that are returned to the family as ashes.

This is a positive move forward to providing greater choice, and more environmentally friendly options for final disposition.
