I’d make this one flow naturally from the first post, with a little more emphasis on the business decision behind choosing fresh versus silk, rather than repeating the same story.

There’s something very special about creating with fresh flowers… but as anyone in the floral business will tell you, there’s a LOT that happens before anyone sees the finished design.

Sourcing the right flowers, conditioning them, preparing everything, keeping them hydrated and then constantly checking they’re going to behave themselves until the moment they’re needed!

It’s exactly why I love working with silk flowers for my corporate and long-term installations. They’re reliable, durable, beautifully consistent and allow me to create designs that can evolve with a space without the pressures that come with fresh flowers.

But business is about being adaptable too. Sometimes a client brings you a brief where fresh flowers are simply the right choice, and that’s when you have to embrace the challenge and enjoy the creative process.

This country garden-inspired tribute and celebration was definitely one of those occasions.

The garden roses, dahlias, berries and those beautiful deep autumnal tones created something that simply wouldn’t have had quite the same feeling in silk.

So, fresh or silk?

Honestly… I’m still not sure!

They both have their place, and I’m very lucky that my work allows me to choose the right medium for the right brief — rather than putting myself in a box and saying I only do one thing.

Because sometimes the best business opportunities are the ones that make you change your mind.

Absolutely — I’d make it a little more business-minded while keeping your natural, chatty voice and the idea that sometimes the best opportunities are the ones you didn’t plan for.

I know I keep saying I’m not going to work with fresh flowers anymore… and then a brief like this comes along!

One of the things I’ve learnt in business is that you have to stay open. Open to new ideas, open to challenges, and occasionally open to completely ignoring yourself when you’ve said, “I’m definitely not doing that again!”

This brief was one of those moments.

A beautiful country-garden feel, gorgeous garden roses and those rich, warm autumnal tones. How could I say no?

I loved the colour story running through this tribute and celebration — almost like watching a blackberry ripen, moving from fresh greens, through pinks and reds, and finally into those deep, rich berry shades. I even added real blackberries into the celebration table centres to bring that story right through the designs.

This video shows the flowers I selected from the wholesaler before they became the finished pieces.

Business doesn’t always go exactly to plan, and I think that’s part of the fun. Sometimes the challenge is actually the opportunity. Sometimes you have to think outside the box, try something you said you wouldn’t, and embrace what your clients bring to you.

And sometimes, if you’re lucky, they give you a brief that reminds you exactly why you started creating in the first place.

The part you don’t see…

A finished funeral tribute can look effortless, but there’s a lot of work behind the scenes at Cerus Botanical Designs.

Fresh flowers need to be conditioned and prepared before we even begin designing. Then comes the cutting, wiring, mechanics, foliage placement and arranging — all carefully considered to create the finished tribute.

Working with fresh flowers is very different from working with silk, and large orders require plenty of planning, experience and attention to detail.

The finished flowers may be the part you see, but it’s the craftsmanship behind them that brings the whole design together.

And this photograph? That’s the reality of the workshop in the middle of it all!

A little look behind the scenes at Cerus Botanical Designs…

Today has been all about a rather large funeral flower order in fresh flowers, creating beautiful tributes for somebody very dear to us — the daddy of a lady we know and care about.

And I had a very special helper today. My lovely Mummy came out of retirement again to work alongside me.

An old ping pong table became our workbench, the barn became our workshop, and we simply got stuck in.

There’s something incredibly special about creating flowers that will be part of such an important goodbye. Every detail matters, and today we put plenty of love, creativity and care into making sure everything was just right.

And having Mummy beside me made today feel just that little bit more special.

Have you ever thought about tying your whole workspace together with one simple botanical design?

Imagine taking a beautiful design concept and carrying it through your meeting area, lobby, reception desk, boardroom and those smaller spaces around your business.

It doesn’t mean every area needs a huge, dramatic floral display. In fact, not every space is suited to one — and that’s where I think the beauty of a bespoke approach really comes in.

A larger statement arrangement might work perfectly in reception, while smaller versions of the same design can be introduced throughout the building.

The colours, textures and botanical elements become a little thread that runs through your workspace, creating a feeling of consistency without everything looking exactly the same.

And because I work with beautiful, long-lasting silk botanicals, these designs can stay looking fabulous without the weekly cost and maintenance of fresh flowers.

It’s all about making your workspace feel considered, welcoming and connected.

Just something to think about when you’re looking at your business space and wondering how you could bring it all together.
