Giacomo Puccini died 100 years ago this year. To mark the occasion, this summer we are producing one of his most-loved operas, Madama Butterfly. Last week, at one of our lunch lectures, Adrian Thorpe spoke about Puccini's interesting (rather romantically complicated) life - and his composition themes - political and sexual intrigue, blood-and-guts sexual jealousy, modern Japan, legendary China, Italian family arguments and even how to cheat at poker (some of the audience delighted to discover The Girl of the Golden West, La Fanciulla del West (1910) - a good old fashioned spaghetti western set in California during the gold rush). Puccini wrote in verismo style, down-to-earth realism - and regardless of how remote from everyday life his subjects are, they are believable, which makes his operas all the more moving.

📽️ So Puccini died in 1924 - film was a thing by then - so we went off to see if there was any real footage of the great man. There is. Enjoy!... https://youtu.be/PPcn-HdjfP8?si=l5UtZfRYh7w7tDnl
