What better day for an update on our bees than World Bee Day. Spring is the busiest time of year for bees as they look to restock food and re-establish their colonies. In the first image you can see our bees are already hard at work making honey.
It’s an exciting time for the bees at Arena HQ because two of our hives are attempting to rear new queens. The oddly shaped cell in image two shows the beginning of a queen cell, and a key sign that the hive is preparing to swarm. Our beekeepers are preventing swarming by creating ‘splits’, essentially artificially simulating one, instead. At the moment, we currently have two fairly straight forward splits, both busy and happy rearing their new queens. We’ll keep you posted on their progress.
These bees aren’t just at our head office to provide delicious honey (and excitement) though. They’re an integral part of our commitment to create more biodiverse surroundings, and with their help, boost the pollinator power in our local area.
