It was great to attend the LJMU Roscoe Lecture today at St George’s Hall to listen to Professor Lady Sue Black.

She spoke about the evolution of Forensic Science and the current challenges facing forensic scientists and the legal system particularly the lack of funding and need for scientific method. She stressed the importance of scientific validity and reliability - stats, probabilities and errors. The need for objectivity and independence - unbiased advocates. Is this possible with forensic labs under police control or commercial provision monopoly. Finally, the importance of clear communication - translating the scientific evidence.

Lady Sue has been instrumental in providing the evidence base to help drive change and coauthored the 2025 APPG report. She is calling for a national forensic science strategy as were once world leading but we are quickly falling behind, due to lack of investment and need for improved scientific understanding.

Most thought provoking and enjoyable.

⭐ About Dr Laura

People often ask how I became involved in STEM education.
The answer is simple…

I've always loved helping people discover that science is fun.

Winning awards has been an incredible honour, but the real reward is seeing young people leave a workshop smiling, asking questions and wanting to know more.

That's what Science Geek Workshop is all about.
