🎉 Another fantastic party with some of the Zyta’s Creatures team! 🦎🐢🐛

When I choose animals for sessions, it’s not just about which species are generally calm and well-suited to handling. Individual personality and temperament matter, too.

Every animal is assessed as an individual, and if they’re showing signs that they aren’t enjoying an event environment, they simply don’t attend.

Animal welfare always comes first. That means providing appropriate rest periods, respecting the animals’ choices and making sure every interaction is positive and low-stress for them.

The result? Happy animals, engaged participants and memorable experiences which put education and welfare at the heart of everything we do 💚

🕷️🕷️🕷️TARANTULA ANATOMY 🕷️🕷️🕷️

Today, learners explored how a tarantula’s body works, from its exoskeleton and book lungs to its circulatory system and haemolymph.

To bring body condition scoring to life, we used a giant cardboard tarantula and water balloons of different sizes to demonstrate the risks of both underweight and overweight spiders.

We also discussed the pros and cons of handling tarantulas, why handling isn’t always necessary, and how to do it as safely as possible when it is appropriate.

A fantastic session full of science, practical learning and plenty of eight-legged appreciation! 🕸️

No, Max isn’t just terrible at hiding…

That tail and foot sticking out from under his hide is a great example of cryptic basking.

Many reptiles don’t always come fully out into the open to soak up UVB. Instead, they expose just a small part of their body while remaining mostly hidden. In the wild, this helps them gain the benefits of sunlight while reducing the risk of predation.

Fortunately, popular opinion does seem to be swaying toward more UVB provision across the board. However, some still think of leopard geckos as a species that doesn’t need UVB because they’re crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk), but research has shown they will actively utilise UVB when it’s available. Behaviours like cryptic basking are one of the ways they do this.

It’s a good reminder that just because you don’t see a reptile stretched out under a lamp doesn’t mean they’re not using it! Providing appropriate UVB allows them to make that choice for themselves and display a wider range of natural behaviours.

Max knows exactly what he’s doing 😎☀️

What makes a great vivarium? 🦎🌿☀️

This week I challenged learners to design their own enclosures. We looked at UVB lighting (including the differences between T8s, T5s and combi bulbs), heat sources, thermostat types, and how to choose the right setup for different species.

These are two of the fantastic results – lots of creativity, some brilliant ideas and plenty of evidence that they were thinking like real keepers!
