Today’s update gives you a closer look at the remarkable progress unfolding on the former Shakespeare Barn site. Creative Director Tim FitzHigham sits down with Archaeologist Justin Garner Lahire to explore the latest discoveries emerging from the ground where the historic barn once stood.

The team has uncovered original footings and brickwork, an extraordinary find that offers rare insight into the site’s past. These structural clues are directly informing how we rebuild, reinterpret, and reimagine this much loved space for the future.

Follow the transformation each week as the site continues to evolve and new stories are revealed.

St George's Guildhall in King's Lynn, Norfolk, is one of England's largest complete surviving medieval guildhalls.

It's also the UK's oldest working theatre and the only theatre left that can credibly claim to have hosted William Shakespeare.

The Guild of St George was established prior to 1376 and began work in the 1390s. This building was completed by 1401 and is Grade I listed because of its rarity.

The Guildhall closed earlier this year due to structural failures that made public access unsafe, but a £721,330 grant from our Heritage at Risk Capital Fund is enabling roof repairs and addressing severe damp issues.

Beneath the concrete, a piece of history has been uncovered. ✨

As work continues on the restoration of The White Barn at St George’s Guildhall, an original historic brick floor has been revealed beneath the modern surface.

This remarkable discovery offers a glimpse into the building’s past, and we're pleased to share that the floor will be carefully protected and preserved beneath the new flooring, ensuring this important piece of heritage remains safeguarded for future generations.

Every layer of The White Barn has a story to tell, and we're excited to uncover more as the restoration progresses.

St George’s Guildhall has stood at the heart of King’s Lynn for centuries. Today, its restoration is well underway, and we’re excited to bring you behind the scenes.

This week Creative Director, Tim FitzHigham took to the top of the Red Barn, where the entire roof has been carefully stripped back so our team can assess the historic timbers, and soon it will be rebuilt with modern insulation — all while preserving its original appearance.
