The principles of cut flower gardening are easy. If you want a garden that gives you vasefuls of flowers for months on end, or if you want to start a business, then you don’t need a flower farm, or even a big garden, you just need a vision.
Growing cut flowers is not difficult, if you can dedicate a few hours each week, and the rewards are huge.

I love the little areas of my garden that are just there for me, not to grow cut flowers, but just to be beautiful or offer a moment of tranquility 🩷

What to sow in June? Especially when it’s raining and miserable! Foxgloves are showstoppers in the cut flower business. Hugely expensive to buy from wholesale floristry suppliers, but easy to grow- you can get them started now for next year. They’ll self seed if you leave a few heads on, without dead-heading. Perfect for shade and gravel areas- they are a winner all round. One word of caution though- they are toxic so be careful when handling them: wear gloves or wash your hands thoroughly. Get sowing for huge spires of glamour.

There’s lots of ways to display your flowers. If you find you’ve got some with shorter stems, or you have a few left over from a big display, then these bud vases work so well. They showcase flowers so beautifully and have a big impact when you group them together. You can have them in tight formation or line them up in a looser shape along a windowsill or shelf.

Making a loose & naturalistic arrangement takes some time but it’s worth it. Start by stripping your flower stems so you only have 1/3 left at the top. Your main filler will give you a structure to work in. This German Chamomile is not only dainty but it holds the other flowers in place. Next, I work in my cornflowers- a few varieties. Then I add the main stars- they sit slightly taller and I work around the vase, watching that they are evenly spaced, not only in type but also in colour. The two queens of the show go in last: the roses. Sit them in a place they will be admired.

A jam jar full of flowers is not the cheap option that people imagine. Jam jars actually hold a lot of flowers so people can be really surprised at the cost. They look gorgeous, and really suit the very on trend cottagecore aesthetic, but they hold more flowers than the average medium sized vase due to the width of the neck. To get this naturalistic look takes a lot of styling.

I am a huge fan though- to me, they are perfect 🎀

If you want to know how to turn your garden into a ‘Cut Flower Garden’ then hit ‘follow’ for practical and easy to follow advice. It’s not as tricky as it seems and you really don’t need lots of space. I have an abundance of cut flowers for many months of the of the year in a very modest garden. You don’t need to be an expert- just be enthusiastic and willing to give it a go.
