I know you're all wondering how the ants are doing... (don't worry if you forgot about them.. I forgive you 😅)

Well the queen now has 2 workers, and that big white clump in the top left of the tube is her clutch of eggs... So in time there'll be hundreds more!

As only the workers eat I need to offer them food in the form of a pre killed mealworm/cricket so I took the opportunity on today's feed to get a quick snap of them!

Love this time of year! When out foraging there's just so much available.. All the leaf eaters today have got a choice!
Bramble
Beech
Oak
Hawthorne
Chestnut
Honeysuckle
Privet

Lets see which is their favourite!

I tried the Giant Hooded Katydids on Beech a few days ago and it went down extremely well.. Heres one of the females having a munch ♥️

Decided to open the cocooned beetle as I couldn't hear any movement inside.. Welcome to the world lil guy! So beautiful ♥️ he's happily eating away at some apple.

I have 3 more grubs from this species (m ugandensis - giant african flower beetle) they're growing on nicely but still a way off cocooning so unfortunately for this beetle he'll never get the chance to breed but he will be used for education for the foreseeable!

We now have 4 Rothschild Moths emerged from cocoons! One to go.. Sadly the first lil guy passed away already but their life span is only 5 days.. 😔
But some good news - we have eggs! Only 2.. But they have been doing the deed so hopefully more will appear 😍

Exciting update!

We have our first school signed up for Creature Connections After School Club!

These sessions will be run weekly for one hour after school on the premises, in half term blocks. Each week we will look at a different topic and a few creatures will be brought in to help with the learning!

Topics include:
Rainforests
Habitats
Camouflage
Life cycles
Evolution
Food chains
Minibeast anatomy
Adaptations
Nocturnal vs diurnal

We are so excited to be rolling these sessions out to schools and cannot wait to get started!!

Eeek how exciting! I never even got chance to introduce you to our newest additions! We recently got 9 moth cocoons, 5 Rothschild and 4 Atlas.. Yesterday one of the Rothschild emerged ♥️ how beautiful is she?!

Lets hope another emerges ASAP so we don't lose the opportunity for breeding!

This is Buzz. I've had him since he was a tiny dot of a tarantula ♥️ today was feeding day and he decided he wanted to have a bit of a wander - even Kaia got to say hello!

Buzz is a Brazilian Black Tarantula, one of the slower growing species! I've had him for just over 2 years and he's changed so much 😍

He is so cute and super friendly, I hope he stays this way as he grows so he can come out to meet you all!

Spring is in the air! Baby Florida Katydids are a starting to hatch! I just love how funky they look as nymphs! Few snaps of the hatchlings, and our remaining adult female ♥️

Minibeasts play a key role in the EYFS and primary school curriculum.
Creature Connections gives children the chance to study a natural science and biology topic first-hand!
In science, the official term for a minibeast is an invertebrate, meaning any animal without a backbone - and what do we specialise in?! Yep that's right - invertebrates!!
