Rosemary was historically used in funeral boquets rather than flowers. The evergreen plant represents eternal life, as well as symbolising remembrance and loyalty. 🌿

More practically is disguised any foul odours, before modern mortuary practises. 💐

🎩 In traditional UK funerals, it’s still common for the funeral director to pause and tip their top hat to the deceased, often during the procession or on arrival.

The gesture dates back to Victorian times, when hat-tipping was a sign of deep respect. Even today, it remains a quiet but powerful tribute to the life being honoured.

🎵 In 1977, Chopin’s Funeral March reached the UK music charts. This surprising hit came from a comedy sketch by The Goodies.

The episode featured a spoof martial art called “Ecky Thump,” complete with bagpipes and black pudding. Viewers loved it, and the music gained unexpected popularity.

Even funeral music can make the charts with a bit of classic British humour.

Boom celebrates musical greats like David Bowie, Dusty Springfield, and The Rolling Stones; artists who made their mark by doing things their own way. We think funeral planning should be the same: personal, meaningful, and entirely up to you.

Our new ad on Boom is about starting the conversation. Not because you're "getting older" but because you've lived enough to know that planning ahead is an act of care for your loved ones.

If you're joining us from Boom: welcome. We're so glad to have you here.

Ozzy Osbourne, legendary frontman of Black Sabbath, passed away on July 22, 2025, at age 76 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Before his death, he made it clear he didn’t want a traditional, somber send-off. He wanted music, energy, and no “mope-fest.” He also understood that the funeral would be about the people left behind and what they wanted. He joked they could even play Justin Bieber or Susan Boyle if it made people smile.

Whether you want a full church service or something totally out there, your funeral should reflect your personality, but also help those left behind to grieve you the way they need to. Planning ahead makes that possible. Start planning today with The Farewell Guide.

🧊 Funeral Fact Friday: Cryogenics - it's more than science fiction!

Cryogenic preservation isn’t just science fiction, though it still feels like something from a film.

The idea is simple: freeze the body (or just the brain) after death in hopes that future medicine might one day bring you back.

It’s not cheap... a full-body freeze can cost £150,000 or more, and brain-only preservation starts around £50,000.

Whether it’s visionary or wishful thinking, people are already signing up. Would you? Let us know in the comments 👇

In Northern Australia, the Tiwi people create something called Pukumani poles — beautifully carved and painted wooden sculptures made for funerals.

These poles aren't just art. They're a way to honor the dead and help guide their spirit to the afterlife.

Months after someone is buried, their family and community gather again for a final ceremony. There’s dancing, body paint, storytelling — and the Pukumani poles are raised at the burial site.

Each pole is one of a kind. They reflect the person’s life, family, and spirit. Some stand for years, watching over the land.

It’s one of the most powerful and visually striking ways a culture says goodbye.

💍 Funeral Fact Friday
Would you wear jewelry made of your loved one’s hair?

In the 1800s, mourning jewelry was more than fashion... it was a grief ritual. Locks of hair were braided into brooches, tucked into lockets, or even turned into rings.

After Queen Victoria lost Prince Albert, she wore his hair in jewelry for the rest of her life, sparking a trend that swept Europe.

Romantic or a little spooky? You decide. 👀
