🔊 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

DJ, raconteur, author, producer, broadcaster and Fun Lovin’ Criminal, Huey Morgan – a modern day rock’n’roll renaissance man – is many things to many people.

In addition to being the decade-long host of one of the only specialist music shows on BBC Radio 2, Huey is the Lower East Side voice of Saturdays on 6 Music with his critically acclaimed, award winning show featuring music, new and old, from all four corners of the globe. He’s the man who joins the dots between funk, soul, disco, classic hip hop and rock’n’roll. And the man who is known for telling laugh-out-loud stories and talking to the listener as if pulled up on a bar stool next to them.

Huey’s past is not any less significant either; as the former frontman of legendary 90s outfit ‘Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ which is soon approaching its 30th anniversary, he is the man who played a huge part in this funk-fried indie bands journey in breaking big worldwide and selling over 10 million records.

His inimitable presence has seen him become a silver screen star, featuring in full-length movies ‘Head Rush’ and ‘Soulboy’, as well as regular TV work, one of them being 2020’s BBC’s landmark documentary ‘Huey Morgan’s Latin Music Adventure’ where he dives into the sounds of Puerto Rico, Brazil and Cuba – on a quest to understand Latin music’s everlasting appeal; a far cry from his early days as a US marine.

Sunday night headliners Sugarhill Gang have marked the 45th anniversary of their ground-breaking classic ‘Rapper’s Delight’ with a new video.

The animated visual has been described as “a celebration of not just this hugely influential track, but the entire hip hop culture that has grown from it”,

Originally released in September 1979, ‘Rapper’s Delight’ was one of the first hip-hop songs to gain mainstream popularity when it broke into the US Billboard Hot 100. It also shot to number three in the UK and number one in Canada.

The track, which samples Chic’s ‘Good Times’, was preserved in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2011 for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

‘Rapper’s Delight’ has been sampled by countless artists over the years, including Beastie Boys, Lil' Kim and many more.

A beginners guide to Glasgow’s own Gordon Eliminator!

Gordon Eliminator hit the decks at age 8 in Airdrie’s Double A Discotech and has been a fixture in Scotland’s underground ever since.

As a teenager, he threw infamous raves in chip shops and Celtic clubs, before launching the legendary Vibro nights, hosting icons like Andrew Weatherall & Evil Eddie Richards.

When dubstep’s first wave crashed in from South London, Gordon was ahead of the curve booking Skream, Mala & Sgt Pokes for their Scottish debuts and running all-night sessions powered by Mungo’s Hi-Fi in forgotten Glasgow basements.

This became the birth of Fortified Sessions, a scene-shaping series that led to a multi-year residency at the Glasgow School of Art, radio shows on Reload and Sub FM, and the launch of his influential label, Fortified Audio.

Today, Gordon’s sonic explorations span from instrumental hip-hop to cosmic boogie, with projects like Work For Love and Sonic Terrace keeping him on the leading edge.

Recent guests at his rebooted Fortified nights at The Flying Duck include UKG legend El-B, while his genre-defying sets at St. Luke’s and Vinyl Bar continue to surprise and delight.

Even if you've never fully immersed yourself in one of his parties, you're likely aware of his revered status.

A skilled turntablist and pivotal figure in Glasgow’s underground, Gordon has been instrumental in promoting some of the city’s most eclectic & forward thinking parties.

Whether he’s digging for dusty funk gems or dropping bass-heavy curveballs, Gordon Eliminator remains a DJ’s DJ—fearless, focused, and always in it for the heads.
