Exclusive-use, 3-day wedding weekends with beautiful on-site accommodation for up to 30 guests. The Great Barn is a 15th Century barn (with its impressive 45 foot high ceilings, it also known as the “thatched Cathedral” ) located about 8 miles to the SW of Exeter on the edge of Dartmoor. It is a beautiful, tailor-made wedding venue, set in the grounds of a private estate, offering Wedding Parties exclusive access from Friday-Sunday for weekend weddings, and Tuesday afternoon to Thursday morning for mid-week weddings. The Great Barn Devon is licensed for civil ceremonies and partnerships, and weddings and wedding receptions take place year round. It has a capacity of 250 (plus 70 in the adjoining round house) when standing; a capacity of 168 sitting at round tables, and 198 at long tables. Wedding guests have access to The Great Barn Devon itself; the adjoining roundhouse (also ideal for a bar); use of a professionally fitted kitchen; mature walled gardens; and use of a couple of stunning cottages if required.

This summer has been a long, hot and very dry one, and while we’ve all enjoyed plenty of sunshine, it hasn’t been without its challenges.

Our team of gardeners - and of course all the farmers surrounding our countryside estate - have had to work exceptionally hard through the lack of rain, and on the very hottest days, it’s not always been the easiest weather for weddings and their guests either.

We’d be lying if we said we haven’t also worried about the lawns. We’re so used to seeing The Great Barn surrounded by lush green, and when the grass starts turning golden, there’s an inevitable thought of, “What is that going to look like in the wedding photos?”

But then we see a photograph like this.

Leah and Chris’s wedding, captured from above by and suddenly the browns and golds don’t look like something to apologise for at all. We think this photo is a lovely reminder that there’s beauty in nature, even when it doesn’t look quite as we’re used to.

A little introduction from the people behind The Great Barn Devon.

We’re John and Emma, and we’ve called Place Barton home for more than 25 years. We moved down from London in 1997, and somehow, all these years later, we find ourselves running a wedding venue from what was once our family home.

Although we no longer live on site, we are still one a minute away - just up the hill, which means we’re very much hands-on. We like it that way; you’ll know who you’re talking to, we’ll know your plans, and there’s always someone nearby if you need us.

We’ve poured such a lot into making The Great Barn what it is physically, but for us, it’s always been about the people who come here. Creating somewhere beautiful but relaxed, where you can settle in for the weekend, bring everyone together and enjoy every moment of your celebration in total privacy.

And after more than 20 years, we still love seeing couples arrive and make the place their own.

So, hello from us. We’re very pleased to have so many of you here!

Just a couple of sneak peeks from Emily and Rafe’s BEAUTIFUL day last month.

Mollie and Jon described their wedding as “better than we could ever have imagined” and looking back through these photographs, you can see just how much thought they put into making the day their own.

They chose a minimal, chic feel with dusty blue running throughout, summer wildflowers, candles and long trestle tables arranged in a U-shape for a relaxed, inclusive banquet. Their order of the day was displayed on an old painting stepladder, with alarm clocks set to mark each part of the wedding – such a clever detail.

But what mattered most to them was how the day felt. They wanted everyone together, able to mingle between the Great Barn, bar and dance floor, and for the whole celebration to feel intimate despite the scale of the space.

“We honestly had the best day. Everything was perfect.”

Mollie and Jon, thank you for sharing your day with us, and for such kind words about our team. A really lovely wedding to look back on, and one we are so pleased to have been part of!
