There's something special about celebrating with the people who matter most — and the right entertainment can turn a great party into a night nobody forgets.

Whether it's a milestone birthday, a significant anniversary, or simply a gathering of friends and family who deserve something a little out of the ordinary, close-up magic has a way of bringing people together. Moving through the room during drinks or a meal, I work with small groups, sparking conversation and creating moments that feel genuinely personal — because every trick happens right in their hands, right in front of their eyes.

For larger celebrations, a parlour or stand-up show gives the whole room a shared experience. Everyone gathered, everyone watching, everyone reacting together. It's a different energy — and it works beautifully when you want a clear centrepiece to the evening.

Private parties are where I do some of my favourite work. No two events are the same, and that variety is what keeps it interesting after all these years. A 40th in a hotel suite, a 25th wedding anniversary in a marquee, a retirement gathering in a private dining room — each one has its own feel, and the magic adapts accordingly.

If you're planning a celebration and want entertainment that genuinely adds something, get in touch and we can talk through what would work best for your event.

There's something that happens at a corporate event when magic enters the room.

Conversations start. People look up from their phones. Strangers become an audience, and an audience becomes a moment that people actually remember.

Whether you're planning a product launch, a trade show stand, an awards dinner, a client evening or a summer company BBQ — live magic has a way of making your event feel considered. Thoughtful. Like someone put real effort into the experience.

Close-up magic works particularly well in those in-between moments — guests arriving, drinks receptions, the lull between speeches. It fills the space with something genuinely engaging, without competing with your programme.

If you're in the early stages of planning and wondering how entertainment might fit into the day, I'm happy to have a conversation about what would work best for your event and your guests.

Yesterday marked my 27th year taking part in the Edinburgh Taxi Day Out — an event that never gets old, no matter how many times you've been part of it.

Entertaining the children is always the highlight. There's something about performing for young audiences that strips everything back to what magic is really about — the pure, uncomplicated joy of something impossible happening right in front of you. No pretence, no politeness. Just genuine wonder.

This year the organisers had a few extra hurdles to clear to make the day happen, and they cleared every one of them. That kind of quiet dedication deserves to be acknowledged. Events like this don't run themselves, and the effort behind the scenes is enormous.

27 years. I find it hard to believe when I say it out loud. But every year, without fail, the children remind me why I do what I do. They're an absolute delight — curious, enthusiastic and completely present in a way that's genuinely humbling.

Grateful to play a small part in a day that means so much to so many. Here's to the next one.

Weddings are one of the most personal events I work at — and honestly, one of my favourites.

Close-up magic during a drinks reception does something quite special. While the couple are away for photographs, guests are mingling, glasses are being filled, and there's that lovely warm buzz in the room. That's where I come in — moving from group to group, creating moments that get people talking, laughing, and genuinely connecting with each other. It breaks the ice beautifully, and by the time everyone sits down for the meal, the room already has that extra Magical feeling.

I've been performing at weddings across Scotland for over 25 years, and I'm proud to hold membership of the Inner Magic Circle — something I don't mention to show off, but because I know couples want to trust that the person they book is the real deal.

Every wedding is different, every couple is different, and I always take the time to understand what you're looking for before the day itself. The magic is personal — it has to be.

If you're starting to think about entertainment for your wedding, I'd love to have a chat. You can find out more at https://www.garyjamesmagician.com/ or simply drop me a message.

Some days in this job remind you why you fell in love with it in the first place.

Two festival performances in Fife today — stand-up magic for crowds who had no idea what was coming — then a drive north to finish the evening at a wedding reception in Aberdeen. Three very different audiences, three very different atmospheres, and the same commitment to making each one feel like the only show that mattered.

That variety is something I genuinely treasure about this work. A festival crowd brings its own energy — spontaneous, curious, ready to be surprised. A wedding reception is something else entirely. The emotion in the room is different. People are already happy, already open, and when magic lands in that setting, it lands in a way that stays with you.

Now I'm settled in the hotel, feet up, reflecting on the day. There's a lot of travel that comes with this life — early starts, late finishes, miles on the road — but when the work is good, none of that feels like a hardship.

If you're thinking about adding something a little different to your wedding, corporate event or celebration, I'd love to have a conversation. Get in touch through the website at https://www.garyjamesmagician.com/
